Trip Report - Eastern Cuba 2006

While I know this is an old report, I just re-edited the pictures & I thought that a Photo Report might be worthwhile to entice people away from the beaches. We went in April 2006 (our 2nd trip to Cuba) & rather than the traditional all-inclusive we struck out into rural Holguin & Mayari Provinces for a stay at Cayo Saetia. Many might know it as a day trip from the Guadalavaca beach area but we stayed for several nights.

In defense of my tardiness, neither Fodors or Trip Advisor had Cuba forums or reviews in 2006 . . .

I loved the fact you stayed off the beaten path, that's what I am doing more with my travels.

Ian, thank you so much for posting this - it comes at a very opportune time as we are thinking about a trip to Cuba next year.

looking at the map, it's a "good" 9 hour drive from Havana [where we would fly into from the UK] so a sensible course might be to fly immediately to Holguin, and then work our way back to Havana. I'd really only been looking at the west down to Trinidad but I love the idea of staying on the nature reserve.

Are there others in Cuba?

to answer my own question, i found this excellent website which has wealth of information about nature reserves, cities, beaches and a lot else besides:

it looks as if a fortnight won't even scratch the surface!

thanks very much, Ian. The trip is sort of on hold at the moment, but if I get my mojo back, I'll drop you a line.
