ye, if you go after 1-1-07, and it`s not to go to Nevis, it`s to get back into the USA.

Pat's answer assumes you are a US citizen but the date given is incorrect. US Citizens who are arriving back into the US from the Caribbean will need valid passports after January 8, 2007 (the date was pushed back from Jan 1 not too long ago). This applies to all US citizens, even infants.

Just a bit of preaching - in this day and age no one should travel outside their home country without a passport.

What about for the US Virgin Islands? I keep reading that you can get by with your drivers license & an original birth certificate but that a passport is recommended?

You will be able to travel to the US Virgin Island without a passport and will continue to be able to do that after January 8. The reason we always recommend people traveling to the US Virgins have a passport is because it makes your travel much faster and allows you to do day-trips to the British Virgin Islands, which can be reached by ferries or sailboats and wher eyo must have a passport.

I love to preach it - get a passport. Every time we travel we see people not able to board because they don't have the proper documentation. People complain about the cost of a passport but think of what it would cost to have to cancel a trip on the day of departure because you find out you don't have the right copy of your birth certificate with you.

I think that what happened last month, with regard to new carry on regulations, should have been a lesson to all.

Regulations/policy can change in a day, and citing what you may have read regarding dates will do nothing.

It's an ever-changing travel world, and a passport is necessary for all, IMHO.

Well put me on the lecture tour as well.

You should NEVER travel outside your own country without a passport.

In these days of terrorists, no fly lists, state sponsored "Rendition" and other problems with travel, I simply wouldn't ever consider travelling to another country without being able to PROVE my Citizenship.

And always ask yourself this as well. While flying internationally, should the aircraft be diverted for whatever reason, (weather, mechanical, or secutiry) and land in a country you never even expected to visit, It sure is nice to have a passport and be able to get farther than the in-transit lounge, especially if you're facing a long delay.

To borrow an expression popularized by a credit card company...... but in reference to my passport.

"DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!!!"
