Would like modern amenities- such as air conditioning. Like excellent service, good food, beautiful surroundings, etc. Any great luxurious accomodations???

My wife and I stayed at Windjammer back in Dec. of 1992, so we are dated, but we loved it. We had a beautiful, open-air 2 bedroom villa with a plunge pool (we went with another couple), very private. Incredible terraces and even an area on the roof we could use. Great pool, smallish but nice beach, beautiful island (although a bit on the untamed side, which we actually enjoyed). Windjammer was very private, down a little nothing road, and alone on its beach. Villas slope up a hillside, affording great views of the cove. Very lush. Again, my info. is dated.

Although I would only rate it pretty good for food, I think the Jalousie Hilton would be an excellent choice for you. It's set both on the beach and up the hillside, smack-dab between the Pitons, which makes for an absolutely outstanding setting. Each room is actually a freestanding cottage they call villas, some with a separate sitting area with pull-out couch. Each villa also has a private plunge pool, patio, outdoor wet bar, nice large bathroom, robes, etc. Pool area is lovely, spa is nice, and the property is over 300 acres for around 100 rooms, so there is lots of space for everyone. The location has to be the very best on St. Lucia for a combo of being directly on a beach and having outstanding views up the hillside. It provides all modern amenities that you would expect, and we found the staff to be slightly above par for the Caribbean. It is a very secluded location, with only one restaurant close enough to walk to if you want to leave the resort. Otherwise you would need to rent a car or take taxis to and fro.

If you're of a more adventurous spirit who would like to trade traditional ameneties for sheer romance, a stay at Ladera or Anse Chastenet might be a good choice for you. They offer open-air rooms with one wall missing so that you can enjoy the fabulous landscape and feel closer to it. The rooms are elevated on a hillside so that bugs aren't an issue, and they're situated so that privacy isn't an issue. All three places, despite differences in style, provide a great escape. They are all in the southwestern part of th island near Pitons, as opposed to previous suggestion of Windjammer which is on the northwest part of the island.

I would agree with Jalousie as a suggestion, and also agree that the food wasn't the best, but not bad.

I have stayed at Anse Chastanet, and though we had rooms far up and near the top, we did have bug "issues," and anyone who needs A/C would NOT be happy there.

You need to consider that if you are at the hotels like Jalousie and Anse Chastenet, you are pretty far from everything else. At least in 1992, the roads between that area and the area closer to Castries (which has the restaurants and things to do) were very difficult and you would not easily have gone back and forth. You should look into this, as well as determine what you are really after. When we stayed at the Windjammer, we went to off-site restaurants most nights and some afternoons. At least when we were there, this would have been much more limited down by the Pitons. However, the area down by the Pitons is beautiful (we hired a sailboat for the day and went down there).

Sara8374: We recently stayed at the Windjammer and absolutely loved it. Europewithkids is very accurate in his description. It is also very close to Rodney Bay (where all the nightlife is).

My top choices in no particular order are:

Jalousie Hilton - romantic and quite, cute little private pools and breathtaking views. I think this is what everyone imagines when they think St. Lucia. Price may be the only prohibiting factor.

Le Sport - I love the restaurant TAO and the full course of included spa treatments that come as part of the package

Sandals Grande St. Lucian - a bit commercial for some but good food choices and new facilities (about 5 years old)

Royal St. Lucian- lovely rooms and suites, nice beach,not all inclusive but walking distance to good restaurants and night life
