Need a Caneel Specialist: Ocean View Rooms at Caneel
Hello--
I was wondering if anyone has stayed in ocean view rooms 1-4 or 99, 100, 101 or 102 at Caneel? My husband and I are heading to Caneel in August for our anniversary and would like a nice view of the ocean but cannot afford the cottages right on the beach. We're wondering if these are a nice (affordable) compromise? We want to avoid the rooms facing Caneel beach, (#s 30-49 and 50-53) which we have been told is busy. Based on Caneel's property map, the rooms mentioned above sit away from big Caneel beach, but hoping for some expertise/prior experience.
Thanks a million for your input.

Rooms 50-53 are actually on Cottage Point, up above the beach, and not busy. From there, it is a short walk to Scott Beach. The first stretch of Scott Beach is quiet with no rooms behind the beach (the map is not to scale, so room 67 starts the rooms on Scott to the north of where it is on the grounds map. Also 99-102 are close to the quiet Hawksnest or Turtle Beach. If you can get an upgrade to Beach Front, the upstairs rooms on Hawksnest will pick up the trade winds. Also Hawksnest has lots of shade in the afternoon so the sun isn't glaring in. Caneel is paradise on earth--enjoy!

Dear xkenx,
Thanks for your input, it was helpful. I guess the map is deceiving with its positioning of rooms 50-53. Cottage Point seems like it would be fine (quiet), I think. Rooms 99-102 seem good too; my only hesitation is that they appear to be near the Activities Room (weddings?) and Teen Center (loud?) It probably won't matter much as we'll inevitably be on the beach most of the day anyway...
jordangirl: We'll be there 8/1-8/7

traveljan, I went to the St. John TripAdvisor forum in hopes that you had asked the same question there. On that forum one can send a private message. I really hesitate giving my e-mail address or name. I wish this forum had the PM feature.
It would be fun to get together for a drink.

Traveljan,
Cottage Point has a some elevation above a rocky shoreline and is on a loop path away from the main path to Caneel Beach. It is disconnected from the goings on at Caneel Beach.
50-53 are two cottages, two rooms per cottage. The Cottage Point cottages seem to have a lot of privacy. You can get better view from Google Earth.

Ask for Ocean View at Caneel beach, not sure of the numbers. It is just steps away from Caneel Beach, for great snorkeling and close to the main pavillion for breakfast lonch and the gift shop. Upstairs is preferable for a great view and I have heard of downstairs flooding during heavy rains. I have been there many times, 12. and this area is not 'busy'. Cottage Point prices have increased and are more expensive than beachfront.

If your budget can go for it I suggest putting Coyyage #7 rooms C, D, E, of ONLY on request. As a back-up Cottage Point 50-53 is very nice and the beach is not really very far away. But Cottage #7 has large rooms, great views in rooms I suggested and a nice very little beach that we always were alone on.

The OP stated that they couldn't afford beachfront, so Cottage 7 is definitely out. Thanks for the Cottage 7 best room views, though, StanKase.
Traveljan, If you haven't already booked, I suggest contacting a Virtuoso travel agent. Booking with them includes an upgrade (if available) We booked Courtside, the lowest level, through Virtuoso for our January 09 stay and were upgraded to beachfront. The Virtuoso rate also includes full, hot breakfast buffet, although I believe you can get that by booking Rosewood Escapes currently. Virtuoso can get you the advertised special rates, too.

One more thing I forgot to add, one of Caneel's managers recommended room 100 by Turtle Bay for Ocean View. I suspect if you book an ocean view room through Virtuoso and request Turtle Bay, you may be upgraded to TB beachfront, which is gorgeous.

Turtle Bay Ocean view rooms are very special, that few people know about. Adjacen to Turtle Bay estate House and yet very private, they are located on a hill with a to die for view. There is a small path to a small private beach below, that few guests know about; Turtle Bay Beach is just a short walk away, and Hawksnest Beach just a bit furhter. Another big plus is that guests have use of the Estate House patio. Sitting there at any time is lovely, but on a stary night is something very special.
