I am heading to Negril for a week with my girlfriend and would like some suggestions on places to eat and things to do while on vacation. We are staying at a hotel on 7 mile beach and this is not an all inclusive as we like to try different restaurants and mingle with the locals. We enjoy great happy hours, great food and beautiful sunsets. We are in our late 40's/early 50's so tend to be in bed by midnight. Am looking for some suggestions on things we should not miss on our trip.

Near town, out from the round-about, eat at Sweet Spice. Heading out of town towards the cliifs Canoe is very good.
Up on the Cliffs for an elegant/casual dinner go to Ivan's at Catcha Falling Star. For the best food on the Cliffs have a meal at Sips and Bites, very casual, no alcohol, but you can bring your own Red Stripe if you like.
Down on the beach the restaurant at Charela Inn is good (high end, french food, with local music and entertainment certain nights).
You're probably not going to be "mingling with locals" much at any of these but perhaps somewhat at Sweet Spice or Sips and Bites.
More restaurants to try on the cliffs:
THREE DIVES: Cliff side of the road. Think of it as a step up from an outdoor picnic. Grilled lobster, chicken, beer, wooden tables set up outside.
CHICKEN LAVISH: Opposite side of the cliff road. One of our favorites in Negril. Very low-key. GREAT fried chicken, homemade conch soup, fresh fruit drinks, beer.
ROCKHOUSE: Cliff side of the road. Gorgeous restaurant with unbelievable views, so-so food, interesting bar scene. Go at sunset for the fresh fruit daiquiris or other drinks. Dinner is OK, but expensive.
On the beach:
BEST OF THE WEST: Tiny roadside jerk chicken stand opposite IDLE AWHILE. Good for lunch or takeout if you want to eat on the beach or in your room.
ALFREDS: We've only gone there for the reggae music, but it's a fun place to go. I think they have food, but I don't remember eating there.
COCO LA PALM: Next to IDLE AWHILE- has one of the best breakfasts on the beach. OK lunch ( typical fare: grilled chicken, jerk, hamburgers) at the bar. SKIP dinner!!!
Other activities:
Definitely take a snorkeling trip out to the reef if you're interested. It's beautiful, and last time there was a lot to see! You can arrange this through the front desk of almost any hotel on the beach. I would recommend going through the hotel unless you get a direct recommendation for another vendor through this forum or other guests.
Have a great time!
For things to see and do:
Black River, YS Falls, Mayfield Falls, Appleton Rum Factory, Pelican Bar, Rick's Cafe and Margaritaville.
Jamaica is known for its awesome beaches and lovely weather. You can indulge in the following activities when you get there: Jamaican Canopy Tour from Ocho Rios, Negril Sunset Tour, Black River Safari from Montego Bay. Have food at Negril- A Rockhouse Restaurant, and you will cherish its Jamaican cuisine for years to come.
