Jakes- Shabby but not chic
Just returned from Jakes in Treasure Beach and was SO disappointed! Room was not clean, way too small, most things in need of repair and feel ripped off. Was truly looking forward to it after reading so many good things but think it's just one of those situations where everyone thinks it's "cool" to go there but there's nothing behind the hype. They cannot charge those kinds of prices ($120) for a dirty tiny broken down room with no phone, tv, ac, or cds like promised. Sorry to be negative but had to inform! Felt like I was either camping with no equipment or staying in a mediocre youth hostel.

Jane,<BR><BR>Sympathy extended. Saw an extended piece about Jakes on Travel channel or similar, and no matter how hard the announcer/presenter tried to make it sound funky/cool/low-key/hip, it was obvious to me the place was essentially a couple of shacks by the beach.<BR>I've stayed in rustic accomodations in the Caribbean, but this looked below rustic.<BR>I imagine you and I will now be broadsided by the Jake fanatics who will try to make us look snobby or patronizing for not appreciating "this little slice of what the Caribbean used to be."<BR>Sorry, I remember what the Caribbean used to be, and this isn't it.

Jane--Go straight to owner JASON HOUNSELL or better yet his mother SALLY and complain,as well as to ISLAND OUTPOST. Jake's might be architecturally-amusing,but it's not my cup of tea, either --tho Sally makes a decided point of NOT having phones,tv or ac right up front. We send our Treasure Beach-bound guests to UNFORGETTABLE, a private villa in Fort Charles (see www.jamaicaescapes.com) where you'll see from the testimonials the response is markedly different.

The Travel Channel piece on Jake's was done by Hunter Reno and is at least a year old, it showing Berry Berenson.<BR>Jake's does do good things for TB,aside from putting it on the map. So I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water. Drinks, a lounge around lunch can be sweet. But for accomodations in the TB area, there are many many alternatives at every price level/see the TB community Web site at www.treasurebeach.net

Thank you for your sympathy, and yes Tiverton, I did know there woudn't be ac/tv/phone- the cds and cd player (broken) were promised and not delivered. The shower didn't even work and the ceiling fan made so much noise we couldn't sleep with it on. They were fully booked so we couldn't change our room and my point is that the value was just not there. If I had paid $55-60 per night I would have thought, wow, this is cheap but fine. Rustic to me means no tv/ac/phone but the word rustic shouldn't be able to cover a dirty room in desperate need of repair. Okay that's it-moving on!

Couldn't agree with you more. What a rip-off. We didn't even get a ceiling fan which they cleverly to hide in the room description - just a standing fan so couldn't sleep at all and they wouldn't move us even though we saw empty rooms. Way too much hype about this place - the design is cute but the rooms are way overpriced.
