That sounds really high. BTW, you meant 2013 obviously, right?!
Check out Farecompare.com. I am seeing non stops for $522; one stops for $477. Many airlines to choose from. Good luck!

That is an expensive week to go (midwinter break) for both airfares and hotels but even acknowledging that, $1673 which is $836 per person is very high.

Never in my life have I paid over $500 per person traveling to the islands from Boston. I would think you should be able to beat that price bigtime....especially if you can adjust your days by one or two days. Certain days of the week are traditionally cheaper to fly. I'd keep shopping.

Ah ha, you are considering President's week 2013!
I try to book about 6-9 months out for travel during President's week.
As Bassguy says look to travel a day or two earlier or after the holiday weekend on the Tuesday or Wednesday.

I'd be happy paying under $400 per ticket and would not pay more than $500 for a direct flight.

try using this website to find flights and airfare and then go to the airline's site:

http://matrix.itasoftware.com

although you may be looking to travel during the February midwinter break, you should find better prices. and thanks to the disruptions caused by Hurricane Sandy, schools in NYC and surrounding suburbs that were closed for a week will be making up lost days during a portion of the midwinter break. That may mean that some who were going to travel during that week are no longer able to so.
This may work to your advantage.

Prices to the Caribbean have gone up the past couple of years but that does seem like an extremely high price for Boston/SJU. Especially for a flight that requires a stop in each direction. But it could be due to your dates, as others have said.

I don't know how many cruise ships still leave from San Juan but they usually cruise Saturday to Saturday and that could also account for full (i.e. expensive) flights earlier in the day
.
