First trip to Cap Juluca
Hi all,
I'm making my first trip to Anguilla in August and have decided to stay at Cap Juluca. I'm considering a Luxury Room or a Junior Suite. Does anyone have advice on rooms to request or those to avoid? I've heard that some of the rooms are done in a more formal, heavier style than the original rooms, and I'm guessing that those are the newer pool villas. Are they better or worse than the originals?
I'm very excited about the restaurants on the island (that was a deciding factor), and want to try Blanchard's and Malliouhana in addtion to the spots at Cap. I was also looking at Trattoria Tramonto. Any recommendations for a newbie?
Thanks in advance! I'll be sure to share my experience upon return.

My wife and I just returned from 6 nights at CJ..we had a Jr. Suite in Building 2 on the 1st floor which was outstanding. I would not change if I went back. I'm sure the pool suites are nice but not worth the extra $$ for me. I thought Blanchard's was the best restaurant but Mango's, Straw Hat and Oliver's were outstanding. Be sure to go to the Friday night BBQ at CJ which is in the informal restaurant and you eat on the beach but at a nice table in the sand. Lots of fun. Good luck to you.

We have been to CJ several times and the junior suite, second floor is definitely the way to go. Some of the junior suites have an outdoor shower - which is great.
Restaurants: Pimms (at CJ), Mangos and Blanchards. Scilly Cay is an island that is casual and great for fresh lobster but make sure you have plenty of cash (at least $150).

Mango's & Straw Hat for Sure. Cedar Grove at Rendezvous Bay Beach Resort is also very nice - just don't expect the fatest service at Cedar Grove We joked about it but hey, we were on vacation enjoying the wine and a nice, long, long, ong relaxing dinner - food was amazing!
You will love Anguilla!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for the info! I'm looking forward to trying all these restaurants - we're going for five nights and want to try a different place each night. Scilly Cay sounds fantastic.
One more question: would you avoid one of the villas near George's (because of noise) or is it more convenient to be there? I made the reservation today but want to make sure I don't get stuck with a bum room.
Thanks!

Just got back from Cap. In the slow season, they close down whole buildings, so the ones up the road by the pool villas (past George's) will be closed. All are fine, but I would NOT take the ones right next to George's (6 and 7, I think). I prefer the second floor for privacy, and the fantastic bathroom is worth the extra $$ for the junior suite. Our favorite restaurant was Straw Hat. Also enjoyed Barrel Stay, Trattoria Tramonto, Pimms was okay, not tops. I would not recommend Blanchards as our service was really poor, and should be perfect at those prices, high even for Anguilla. Also, their US wines are laughable and exorbitant. Stick with the Old World wine.

Stayed in a luxury room last month. First floor, walk out right onto the beach. The bathroom has a glass wall with an outdoor shower. I've been in a Jr suite also, and if you have the disposable cash go ahead. But if you want to save money for some of those fantastic restaurants or shopping in St Martin, a luxury room is absolutely acceptable-and I have very high standards!

Thanks so much for your reply. Is there also a tub in the bathroom? Is it weird to take a shower outdoors in the evening?
Also, I have read on some posts that the doors to the rooms do not lock. Is that accurate? Do they have in-room safes?
Lastly, are the Luxury rooms relegated to certain buildings? I'm assuming all have great views.....
Thanks in advance.....the suite is probably not an option for this trip.

Luxury room has a tub and a shower. There is a door to an outside, enclosed area through the shower. Luxury rooms start in villa 4 and run through the mid-teens. I'm not sure if they are all on the first floor-the ones I have stayed in were. The view from the second floor is more spectacular, but from the first floor you walk out the patio onto the beach.
All the rooms lock from the inside, but when you leave you can't lock your door. There is an inroom safe. Burglaries are rare but not unheard of.

Went to CJ on a company retreat not too long ago. My colleagues and I stayed in Jr. Suites, which were fantastic -- taking showers "outside" was one of the highlights of my trip; people don't realize until you get there that it's rather private...you are coverered by a shower wall, that isn't covered so you feel as if you are outside, without compromising your privacy. Our department heads stayed in a Luxury suite/villa -- needless to say, we all spent most of our time in their amazing suite during the day. If money is not of concern, it is worth it. Pool is very large and private (it's not facing the front of the villa, nor is it facing the ocean)...once you step inside the luxury suite, you'll find it is airy and large...they occupied both floors - the villa has an understated elegance feeling to it. Great views (though all of our suites had great views as well -- they were all facing the ocean). Our colleagues stayed on top floor, which was nice for evenings as we gathered for cocktails, while looking below and beyond us...but in the mornings, I was so thankful to be on the lower level...I would wake up and literally walk right out my door and onto the beach... We had a wonderful experience at Cap Juluca, frankly, the best beach I have experieced to date. Regardless of the type of room you decide to reserve, if you choose an ocean front room, I can't imagine you wouldn't enjoy it...
