Dog Friendly Caribbean?

We are looking to plan a short 4 day trip to the Caribbean in the beginning of May. We'll be bringing our 12 lb. dog and are trying to decide between Puerto Rico or one of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

We'd like to go some place where we can relax on the beach, see a few sites, and have plenty of dining options around us in the evening. We'd like to average under $100/day, excluding air and hotel. Generally looking for a calm, relaxing trip.

Given what we're looking for and the fact that we'll have our dog with us, which island would be the best choice to visit?

We initially looked at just PR, but we're also considering St. Thomas and St. Croix now as they seem to be rather dog friendly as well based on some initial research.

Since May's coming up soon, we'd like to narrow down our destination soon so we can book and fashion out an itinerary. Thanks for any help!

I live in the Caribbean 6 monates of the year. It is allmost impossible to trvel with a dog in any of the former British Islands. The French island are much better.
It also depends where you are, bringing the dog from. Make certain you inquire well in time about all the shots and proof of them you need. Even with an implant it will not be easy, many of the smaller
islands have not the scanner to read the information. There are differant scanners for differant islands. Also the only dog friendly airline seems to be AIR FRANCE.
Sorry to be so negative, but I went through it more then ones.

Perhaps the simplest route in the end is to leave pup at home? with friends, family? in a kennel?

*unless there is a particular reason you "need" to take it......

Beaware that many of the smaller "comuter" carriers, American Eagle included, will refuse to take pets on their planes if the ambient air temperature exceeds a certain amount (90 degrees F., I think).

Really, for a four day trip it doesn't make too much sense - why don't you leave the "little darling" at home with friends or in one of those "new" upscale kennels that have all the amenities a dog could want????

I agree with the previous posters about leaving your dog at home. I love my dog as much as anyone and would never consider putting him through all the hassle of getting ready for a plane trip. I'm sure the dog would rather stay home too. Sammie is a very playful dog and the kennel says he really has a good time. Might end being the same for your dog.
