Ballyhoo/Callaloo cottages Turtle Cove
My husband and I will be returning to Turks and Caicos in April and are considering renting Callaloo Cottage on Turtle Cove for a week (following 5 nights at Blue Horizon Resort on Middle). Has anyone stayed at either Ballyhoo or Calliloo? We're a little concerned about noise and the boat traffic from the marina. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Also, we looked at Coriander -looks like a nice location but may be a bit far from the beach with limited views. Any other advice regarding cottages/villas on Turtle Cove would be wonderful. We've checked out other areas (Sapodilla Bay and Chalk Sound) and would definitely be happy with either area but we're hoping to stay somewhere close to restaurants (stayed at Point Grace last year and loved it -just looking forward to the privacy of a villa or cottage this time).

assume you stopped by turtle cove marina on your last visit. it's a small marina & does not really have a lot of traffic. we stayed just down the beach & i recall a few boats in & out in the am & around 5. (this is mostly boats used for banana boating & tours from the resorts, a few fishing boats - plus the occasional gorgeous yacht) i don't think you'd hear anything from tiki hut or the other restaurants (all of which are closed by 10 or 11) i'd actually be more concerned re the cars using the sand road to your house to get to the sand parking area that people use to access smith's reef snorkeling. again not lots but could be a few cars per day.
coriander & nutmeg are set back from the beach but have the viewing platforms by their pools for ocean viewing. their pools are quite private. walk to the beach is probably 30-45 seconds. if you have google earth you can get a really good look at the area, although ballyhoo & callaloo were not built when they photo'd - both sit in the scrub area just left of villa turtle beach, just east of the channel. ppl park in the sandy area towards the channel & walk down to the snorkeling entrance by villa sandstone.
i stayed in one of mr moog's houses on ocean point. he is a good host & his houses are meticulously kept.
we liked the area but taylor bay beach is too shallow to swim & has no snorkeling. sopadilla bay beach is better. it too starts shallow but deepens enough to swim. chalk sound houses are gorgeous & you can't beat the view, but the water is brack & not for swimming.

Thanks Virginia and blamona. We are not at all familiar with the Turtle Cove marina as we didn't do a lot of sight seeing on our first visit to T&C (our biggest decision was do we go to the beach or the pool). Everything we've learned about the other areas of Provo we've learned from the internet and books. I think the thing that caught our attention the most about Turtle Cove was the privacy of the Villas and the access to a few restaurants. That being said, it looks like we could find beautiful accommodations in other areas of the island too but maybe without the access- seems like we're going to have to set some priorities.
Virginia can I ask which house you stayed at while on Turtle Cove? How was the noise from the marina area? Would you go back to that area or choose somewhere else?

i stayed twice at a house then called windows a la mar, now http://www.atlanticbeachfrontvillas.com/
i loved the house - we had the downstairs & upstairs was the owners unit. owners were never on island when the house was rented. new owners rent up & down independently. thus NO privacy. not to mention they bought some houses on the canal side of the road & i believe those folks walk through to access the beach. next door is http://www.bellasurmer.com/ which we thought looked like a super house with good sized pool.
the only noise we heard besides the waves was at night from club med. music - stopped at 11, could only hear it outdoors & i think they've since been asked to reduce volume. we rarely saw others on the beach when we went in april.
this is my favorite island location. closest to the best snorkeling (smiths reef) & away from the resorts. drive to resorts/dining is about 15 mins, but turtle cove has 6 restaurants including one of my favs - aqua bar.

ha - some of those huge villas are spectacular, but way to big to 2 people. you may have villa envy though.
the one i've wanted to stay in since my first time on island is sandstone. it's one of the older houses in the area, very close to the sea & right by the snorkeling. i just need to find enough friends who would get along well to fill it....

Slightly off topic but the water in Chalk Sound is not brackish. It is salt water. The sound opens into Silly Creek and the ocean. You can swim in Chalk Sound but the bottom is a bit like swimming in a lake--a little bit squishy.

Thanks for the added info Virginia. I know what you mean about Sandstone - it's my husband's first choice - just a bit tough to justify the cost for just the two of us. Thanks for the tip on Bella Sur Mer - looks like an interesting choice to consider.
One last question for you - how is the driving on the island? The last time we went we were in the resort area with great access to restaurants, groceries... and we were really looking for plain 'ol down time so we didn't bother renting a car. This time we're looking forward to doing much more.

i personally prefer driving on the "wrong" side & wish the US would switch... some people do not adjust as well.
provo driving is easy. it's a small island & almost impossible to get lost. speed limit on the leeward hwy (main road) is 45mph (although locals go faster). we rent from scooter bob - he is in turtle cove & will leave a car at your rental house if you ask. all the rentals companies are fine. agencies used to leave cars at the airport - blamona will know if that is still permitted.
