any day cruises NOT at port?
heading to st martin early april. renting a car for portion of stay to explore...are there any days that cruise ships do not dock? thinking less people..or does it really not matter?

Wednesday and Thursday tend to be the busiest port days for Phillipsburg, but there's at least one ship in port on almost any given day. However, I don't think you'll feel the crush of tourists as much on some days. If you are just renting for one day, ask at your hotel and plan to get on a day when there aren't so many ships in port. The tourist board publishes a schedule. If you rent from a local agency, car rentals are pretty cheap, though to ensure your rental, you need to book it in advance.

This will show you which ships are in on specific dates. If you are out and about on the island - you don't notice the traffic from the cruise ships unless you are shopping - do that in the afternoon and you will be fine. THe traffic is only bad getting over the mountain.
I find that car rentals are not that different in price so not a big worry. Have fun Sxm is beautiful year around
