What to do in St. John, Newfounfland and Halifax
Hi Guys: we will be having port stops in the above in early Oct. and am wondering about what to see and do there. Are there like hop on, hop off tour buses or the like? Don't want anything too long or involved, just a nice and relaxing tour. Thank you. Larry

Halifax has some hop-on, hop-off bus tours (including one in a double-decker, I believe, for that British feel.) There are trolleys, of the horse-drawn and motorized kind, and a whole bunch of other tour things.
St. John's on the other hand...... I don't remember anything when I was there, but of course I was driving and not on the lookout for bus tours. A cursory internet search doesn't turn up much either.....so I'd be inclined to say no. But there are all sorts of different hikes, walks along the coast, etc.... I mean, it isn't too big of a place. Amble along the coast and bring good walking shoes, you should be fine.

In St.John, it's fun to wander along the main street, and also make sure you wander up to George Street, where all the 'action' is.
If you have time, you could go up to Signal Hill, there is a hike up the 'rock' that starts at the Battery area, and is really cool.
If you have a chance to take a bus tour to Cape Spear, that is very worthwhile too.
I can't help you out with Halifax,
Have a great time. Also just enjoy the people in both places.

One thing I remember most about Halifax was visiting the Titanic museum and cemetary. Many of the recovered victims were laid to rest there. We visited right after the movie came out and there is even a grave for a "Jack Dawson" that was loaded with flowers. A little boy's grave had little cars placed it. It was very moving.

Now Larry - you definitely need a vacation!! We decided before that you were going to St John New Brunswick not St Johns Nfld. I gave you a website for St John - it isn't an overly inspiring port of any note but here is the website again http://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g...Vacations.html
I mentioned that Portland was easy to get around and you can pickup a tour in town that takes you around and out to the Cape Elizabeth lighthouse which is just breathtaking http://www.lighthouse.cc/capeelizabeth
Your cruise must be coming up pretty soon.
We haven't heard from our friend Percy - hope he didn't get carried away by a wild animal on safari!!

OMG! T69 you are so correct. Its NB. Well I suppose I could blame Canada for naming two places so similarly. . Yep I do need a vacation and maybe a few days off B4 it begins so I can figure out just where I'm going. . We leave for NYC on the 30th of this month (I'd better double-check ) and we embark 10/3. I was wondering about Percy as well. I thought he would be back by now. I hope that hand isn't acting up on him. Cheers, Larry

If I had a stop in Halifax for one day on a cruise, I'd probably just walk along Barrington St., Spring Garden Road, admire the lovely Victorian Garden, do a tour of the Citadel and check out the Historic Properties and nearby waterfront independently. That would more than fill the day I think.
Halifax is a great small city. Enjoy!
