Top 5 to 10 places to see, things to do/experienc in BC in Aug/Sept
Hi
Planning a trip to British Columbia in Aug/Sept and I would like to know your top 5 to 10 places to see, things to do and experience. We are a couple in our mid 30's, we enjoy the great outdoors, hiking, biking, running, photography, food, wildlife etc. We are thinking of spending two weeks in BC before heading over to Toronto to visit family for 4-5 days then heading to NY for 5-7 days.
Is this a good split of time between the 3 destinations?
Cheers Molly

That's the BC website but where are the British Columbians to answer this question?
MollyJones why don't you tell us what you've planned for BC on your own?

With two weeks to spend in Western Canada, I wouldn't confine myself to BC. The Alberta Rocky Mountain national parks (Banff and Jasper) are essential.
I'd plan to spend a couple of days in Vancouver, three or four on the Island at Pacific Rim National Park (Tofino), and the balance in the mountain national parks (Revelstoke, Glacier, Yoho, Kootenay and the two Alberta parks.) Fly out of Calgary to Toronto and onwards.
If you don't want to leave the coast, then spend a week on the Island split between Victoria and Tofino and the remainder in Vancouver and Whistler. However, I really would recommend the mountain national parks via the Okanagan Valley.

Where are you from? That might affect our suggestions.
By NY do you mean the entire state of New York, or just New York City?
And are we safe to assume that you know it is a very, very long distance from BC to Toronto? Anyway, once you get on an airplane, you can sleep or read...
You certainly have more time than most of us do, to enjoy your visit.
In British Columbia:
1/ the west coast of Vancouver Island -- Tofino, etc.
2/ the museum in Victoria
3/ Whistler, home of the upcoming winter Olympics
4/ get on the water somehow -- a good way is to travel on some of the B.C Ferries to islands between Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland.
5/ Get into central B.C. and find a small town rodeo
6/ since you are runners, run around the seawall surrounding Stanley Park in Vancouver
7/ Since you are photographers: take one photo including boats that you will enlarge and frame when you get home. Same thing for one photograph involving at least one tree.
Lots more to do to fill in the final three...
In your Toronto visit, make sure you get to Niagara Falls and the nearby town of Niagara on the Lake.
And take a day's drive north from Toronto to Huntsville, Bracebridge, etc., or PArry Sound, and take a cruise for a few hours on the Muskoka Lakes or Georgian Bay.
As for New York, assuming it is the city and nearby...For that length of time, take lots of money, becauseyou'll run out of free things to do and besides, the more expensive things are great.
Take the around Manhatten Circle Line Boat tour. This is a great way to photograph NY.
And make sure you see the Statue of Liberty, which you'll accomplish on the Circle Line tour.
When I'm in NY, I must have a steak at SmMith * Wollensky's, behind the Waldorf Astoria, and, if time permits, a sandwich at the Carnegie Deli.
The tour of CArnegie Hall is great.

for bc
tofino - at least 3 nights - the ferry ride from the mainland to victoria is beautiful. catch an early morning one and then drive onto tofino. some people love victoria...personally, i'd skip it.
okanagan - staying almost anywhere except kelowna. beautiful lakes and beaches. good wineries around summerland, penticton, naramata - check out the kettle valley rail trail and sun-oka beach - if you are heavy duty bikers, you could bike from penticton, have lunch at one of the wineries in naramata and bike back.
http://www.kumsheen.com/ - had a blast with this company - we did a three day and rented one of their cabins. i'd recommend the two day one - big water excursion.
lots of lovely areas to explore around nelson/nakusp - if you do research you can find quite a few natural hot springs you can hike into.
