Picnics in Toronto parks...

I will be in Toronto in the end of June and have heard there are many beautiful parks there. Is it allowed to bring food for a picnic in any/all of them? What about a bottle of wine? Thanks for the help.

Wine, or beer, is against the law.

But yes, you are allowed to bring picnics to the parks in Toronto.

Some parks have restaurants in them. Some have stotres that sell prepared food you can take outside for a picnic.

Many large supermarkets have a variety of foods that can be easily packaged for a picnic; there are salads and sliced meats and desserts, plus containers to carry them in.

At the St. Lawrence Market, there are several food suppliers who sell prepared sandwiches, including excellent chicken sandwiches on buns, and back bacon on buns. The St. lawrence market also has bakers who sell excellent bread and buns, and there's a bagel bakery, too. There is a beautiful park immediately north of the St. Lawrence Market, or you can walk to the ferry terminal to Toronto Island.

Loblaws grocery store, at the foot of Jarvis Street, sells ready-cooked picnic food.

In front of several parks you'll find trucks selling hot dogs, hamburgers, and french fries.

High PaArk is the biggest park in Toronto, and is easy to get to by subway; get off at the High Park subway station. Or take the Queen Street streetcar going wwest, and get off at Colbourne Lodge Road or one stop later, at Ellis Avenue, by Grenadier Pond.

Toronto Islands are one giant park, easy to get to by ferry from beside the Westin Harbour CAstle Hotel at the foot of Bay Street.

Yes alcohol can only legally be consumed in a residence or licensed area...but I don't recall the last time I didn't have wine at a picnic on the islands or elsewhere.

eek - it is illegal to have wine with a picnic in the park - I am a flaming criminal - The number of times I have consumed wine during a picnic in a park - ack...that make my picnics all the more exciting now!!

Thank you all! Sounds like the St. Lawrence market is a must. I am glad to hear that the law isn't a real impediment to a complete picnic!
