Ottawa or Kingston..need short rest.
We live in upstate NY and am looking for a short, 3 day get away to refresh before I begin teaching again in the fall. We've been to Ottawa a few times and would like to try something new. Kingston is a place we've never been. What's in Kingston? Are there quaint places to walk to or is it a walking town? Restaurants? Any recommendations for lodging. We've two adults in our 50's who love to walk, eat and enjoy theatre.

Hi Nanceetom,
I suppose it depends on how far you'd like to drive (without knowing where you reside) but if you "love to walk, eat and enjoy theatre", why not visit Toronto. It would offer you many more opportunities than KIngston in all those areas.
Great restaurants, interesting neighbourhoods, wonderful theatre (Lord of the Rings till Sept.2, Spamalot), the Art Gallery of Ontario, Royal Ontario Museum and much more,
As well, if you're coming through Buffalo, have a visit in Niagara on the Lake, or a stay, if a smaller venue to enjoy all your passions is what you might be after. It's a lovely town with the Shaw Festival, fabulous winery restaurants and charming shops.
Take your pick!

The Denault Mansion near Kingston is a gorgeous spot to "refresh" for a few days. The meals are simply amazing. The village of Westport is a wonderful day trip and a quaint place to walk and browse.

It sounds like you're looking for something a bit slower paced than the usual big city. Kingston is nice. I still prefer Ottawa, but Kingston won't disappoint you. Lots of little shops and restaurants tucked in close together along the wharf. Be sure to eat at Chez Piggy. I stayed at Days Inn which was very nice, but you will have to drive down to the wharf. I'm sure there are other places within walking distance.

Here's my post from my visit to Kingston a little over a year ago. I definitely found the streets and architecture charming in places. Good walking town.
Queen's U, Bellevue House, the waterfront area, Princess Street, Wolfe Ferry, and the Fort I tend to think of as the major things in the city.
