First time to Canada
Hello everyone.
My wife and I are planning a 3 days' stay in Canada, during our trip to America this fall. We are late-twenties and have distant relatives in Toronto that would host us during our visit.
We were never in Canada so I was thinking about splitting our travel to three major areas:
Day 1 - Arrival and touring Toronto
Day 2 - Niagara Falls and Welland canal
Day 3 - 1000 islands and departure (from Toronto)
My questions:
1. Would it be better to rent a car rather relying on public transportation? I understand that Toronto's transportation is quite comfortable.
2. On our third day - should we better visit Kingston, Gananoque, or maybe try to do both?
3. Any suggestions, opinions or additions to the plan?
Thanks in advance.

You have too much for 3 days, considering that you are departing on Day 3. I think that you should plan a day trip to either Niagara or the Thousand Islands on Day 2, and spend Day 3 in Toronto again.
You certainly don't need a car in Toronto, but one would be more useful for Niagara and the Thousand Islands than trying to depend on public transportation to either.

I agree with laver... get to Toronto on day one and see as much as you can that day... spend day two on Niagara Falls, either on an organized bus tour from Toronto or on your own and get back to toronto for day three... anything else is too much travel and nearly impossible to do, especially if you are leaving on day 3...

It is rare for everyone to agree on a topic, but in this case, it is so. It is a 3 hour drive to get to Ganonoque from Toronto. If you had 4 or 5 days, I would say go for it, but in 3 days it would be a waste of time.

Luchik,
You simply do not have anywhere near enough time to do what you have in mind (unless you have a private jet at your disposal and even then it's a stretch). The Thousand Islands is not practically possible in the timeframe you have.
About the Welland Canal, is there anything in particular that has your interest like one of the earlier incarnations? If so, drop me a line at [email protected]

Thanks everyone for the answers.
We decided to lengthen our trip by a day or two so we could have two-day's visit to thousand islands.
We are thinking about renting a small speed-boat and travel the islands ourself. I still have a few doubts:
Tovarich replied about visiting Ivy Lea rather then Kingston.
How about Gananoque? or Rockfort? Where is the best place for boat rental?
Is Boldt castle too faraway to sail by a speed-boat?
which other activities the region has to offer?
