Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver and fireworks on August 3???
I'm treating my friend to a 40th Birthday in Vancouver. Her husband booked us a room at the Fairmont Waterfront. Is this a hotel that will make her oooh and aahhh? And, earlier someone mentioned in a post about fireworks on August 3rd? Any more info on this event? Thanks in advance for your help!

The fireworks are an annual event in Vancouver. They start at approx. 10pm and usually last 25 minutes. They occur just off the point at English Bay, can be viewed from either English Bay area or Kits Point. If you are staying at the Fairmont nr. Canada Place, it will be a bit of a walk down Denman Street to see the fireworks. Don't even think about taking a car any closer, the city gets jammed with thousands of people from all over, no cabs will be avail. either. Just walk, enjoy the crowds. Robson Street turns into a sea of people on fireworks night - no cars can make it down the street for over 1/2 an hour and the West End near Stanley Park is closed to all but local traffic. So , definitely go, get reservations if you want to eat at a restarant that evening and enjoy!!! The English Bay Cafe and Milestones are right on the waterfront where the fireworks are taking place - a great place to have a late dinner & people watch.

The fireworks competition is called the Celebration of Light (however, for the longest time it used to be called the Symphony of Fire, so you may find people still referring to it as such).

There are 4 nights of fireworks spread through 2 weeks. The dates are:

Wednesday, July 31 (Italy)
Saturday, August 3 (Canada)
Wednesday, August 7 (Spain)
Saturday, August 10 (finale)

It's one of the most popular free summer events in Vancouver. Tens of thousands of people show up. From the Fairmont Waterfront hotel, you'd probably walk from Burrard Street to Robson, then down Robson to Denman, then down Denman to the beach. It's a decent walk... it's not an abnormal length of a walk downtown or long distance, really. EVERYONE will be walking. Just follow the crowds. Give yourself half an hour to get there, but pack a picnic lunch, drinks, and blankets before you get there. Many people stake out spots on the beach hours before the fireworks start. I'd suggest getting there around 7:30 or 8, have a picnic, enjoy the sunset, watch with amazement how the beach turns into a sea of people and how the harbour fills up with boats, cruiseships (on their way to Alaska), and yachts... and then finally, you're rewarded with a half hour of incredible fireworks.

And I don't think anyone else has mentioned yet, but the fireworks have all been timed to music (which is broadcast on the radio, and played through large speakers at the beach). It's quite spectacular.
