We (5) will be in Corner Brook mid October (cruise), none of the ship excursions appeal to us. What would be some suggestions for things to do for a couple of hours? What will the weather be like?

It would be helpful to know what are the excursions that don't appeal to you so that posters can suggest something different.
Weather will be cool (average for October is 5C/40F) with a good chance of rain. Check the Weather Network forecasts at: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/weather/cities/can/pages/CANF0063.htm
Tours are: Captain Cooks Lookout over 3 hours.
Butterfly House and Insectarium 3 hours.
Wildlife, rivers & woodlands 3 hours.
Walk to waterfalls-eat pastry at Glynmill Inn 3 hours.
Not that we have anything against any of the stops-just would rather be on our own time schedule. Could we possibly cab it to some of the highlights? Any suggestions? Places to eat or shop for local goods? Is the Viking Settlement too far-or is it not worth the trip?
The Viking site at L'Anse aux Meadows is out of the question, as it is about a 5 or 6 hour drive one way from Corner Brook. If the weather is nice, You could try renting a car to see something of Gros Morne National Park, which is about an hour and a half from Corner Brook, but you may not have enough time for that either. You could also hire a cab and ask the driver to take you to some of the sights around Corner Brook. It would likely cost less than a shp's tour.
Good places to eat include Sorrento Thirteen West and the Glynmill Inn.
Thanks so much for the info!
