Backpacking in Europe

My husband and I are backpacking from Dublin Ireland to Munich Germany. We're arriving April 14 and leaving May 5. What are some essentials we need carry? We'll be staying in hostels. Are earplugs good to bring along? Sheets? Towels? How many sets of clothes should we bring. We dont have much money so what are good ways to save over there? We're getting a global eurorail pass. Will we end up spending a lot on buses and other trains?

Hi-while it's been many years since I did the train/hostel thing, I do remember a few helpful hints. A great way to save money is to shop in local markets and cook in your hostel, lots of people do that. I'd recommend bringin earplus and a travel lock for your luggage-I recall locking my pack to my bed, and locking the zippers but I never had any problem. That's a good time to travel, you'll miss the college hordes. I think two or three sets of clothes is plenty. have fun!

Do post in the Europe forum - you're guaranteed many helpful replies.

Water/coffee canteens - bottled water and coffee in Euros adds up real fast.
First Aid kit from Costco/Walmart - you'd be amazed at how much cheaper that is out here.
Sheets/Towels - don't think so generally, but depends on where you're staying.
2 or 3 sets of clothing - dryers in laundrettes eat up coins, best to wash and leave to dry overnight.
Global Eurail - presume you've done your homework on whether that is the cheapest way to travel, this is not a given at all. If doing this for sure, you may want to plan your trip in such a way that you're sleeping a few nights on the train.

Will post some more as it comes back to me - been a while since I did the backpacking trips!
