Algonquin Park Restriced Access during G8

Just got a link from Algonquin Parks website regarding access from the Huntsville end from June 21-28th. Thye are telling you to find another route into the park. Many of our guests travel in from that end . Now you can hit the park form the Whitney end only that week.

Hi - from what I can determine, the map in the attachment seems to confirm what the G8 Security office told me earlier in the spring - that hwy 60 between Huntsville and Dwight will be closed or restricted, but highways 118 and 35 will detour around the closed section allowing access to the west gate of Algonquin. Hopefully that will be accurate as we booked to stay near the west gate that week based on that information (it would take an unreasonable amount of time to drive all the way around the park to the east gate from there).

They have defiinitely steered you in the right direction. Where are you staying on the West side? I am in Maynooth just 30 minutes from the park. I work at a Resort in Whitney which is just outside of the east gate. Most of our clients are from the Ottawa and Toronto areas and travel through Huntsville so we are working on maps to direct them to the Resort now for that week. Ugh! So much Drama for an event lasting such a short period of time...

My understanding is that people will be able to travel up Hwy 35 to reach Hwy 60 and turn east towards the park from there, but will be restricted going west into Huntsville from the Dwight/Algonquin area (or vice versa - the G8 meeting site - Deerhurst - being in between Huntsville and Dwight). But to reach the East Gate and the Hwy 60 corridor through the park, I believe you can access Hwy 35 either by taking the 400 to Hwy 11 to 118, or get onto 35 off the 401 east of Toronto.

There seem to be other detour routes too although some of them are more complicated. And I'm guessing traffic will be heavier than usual on these detours as they fill up with traffic being redirected onto them.

I am terrible at directions but this is one of my Favourite trips up. Take the 401 to the 115 in Peterborough. Then Hwy 28 to Bancroft. From there Hwy 62 to Maynooth and once in Maynooth the 127 to Hwy 60.Once you hit Highway 60 there is an ornage caution light. Turn left to Whitney and the east gate is about 5 minutes from Whitney. Whew! Sounds exhausting but takes only approx 4 hours! LOL
