need cheap flight europe to Melbourne

Need a cheap flight to Melbourne. I'll be backpacking in Europe for a couple of weeks so I can plan my trip to fly out of a number of different places. I'll be in London, Rome, maybe Germany. Florence is very expensive. Cant afford the $4000 price tag I'm getting on searches right now. Any suggestions? Is there a hub I can use?

I talked to someone who flew Thompson Charter Air, a charter flight from London to Sydney on standby. I was talking to him on the airport bus going from the Sydney airport to my hotel. Food for purchase on the plane but they stopped twice on the way and he was able to get good food in the airports. Anyone heard of this? No free wine so I wasn't very interested.

You might want to move this to the airlines section. Those guys over there work wonders.

A lot will depend where you actualy fly from, fares seem to reflect local market so they could vary a lot, as far as airlines with deals Gulf Air, Emirates, malaysia, Thai, Singapore Airlines, Emirates flies from so many places, not just major airports but others like Milan, Dusseldorf, Berlin and others, it really depends where you are flying from but if it's within a few weeks it is a faily 'low' time of the year, it's probably best to wait until you decide where you are flying from and then use local budget agents to get you a flight, don't go spending 4k bucks though !! You will find a lot cheaper than that once there.

If you are going to pay more than Two Thousand USD, then I would check out the price of an around the world airline ticket, assuming you have the time.
