Marlborough walks - quake damage??

We're in the South Island. We have 3 nights scheduled in the Picton later this week to do some day hikes in the Queen Charlotte track area. Does anyone know whether trails are open or not? I'm getting conflicting info from the tourist info folks.

Also - does anyone know anything about the dock problem at Picton? We're scheduled as walk-on passengers the middle of next week and are hoping we don't get cancelled.

Any suggestions for a 2-3 day substitute for Picton/Q Charlotte track? We're currently spending 4 nights in Motueka to explore the Abel Tasman area. Extend our stay in Motueka and explore Golden Bay?? Book a couple of nights in Takara?? Nelson for a couple of nights??

We're looking for short walks, nice scenerary, interesting museums Probably no winery tours - one party can't drink the stuff without ending in the ER.

We'll probably stay the last night in Picton. We're booked on a mid day ferry - but the ferry people seem to be lumping trips together and changing times.

FYI We were in Christchurch last Sunday night, planning to head to Kaikoura Monday AM. Sometimes you're really lucky. We could have easily been in Kaikoura Sunday night.

Thanks all!! Once again.

Queen Charlotte track is open all year, but please note the restrictions for bikers – the section from Ship Cove to Camp Bay is closed from 1 December to 28 February each year.

Hi Wendy -

I'm sorry your trip has been affected by the latest earthquake.

I found this on the DOC site:

<<14 November 2016: South Marlborough earthquake damage
Visitors are advised to stay away from all DOC facilities and conservation areas in South Marlborough until further notice as we still have to assess damage.

Updates will be placed on the website as further information is available. Report any safety issues to 0800 DOC HOT.>>

I don't know specifically what area is considered South Marlbrough thouh.

My only suggestion is that you call the Picton I Site and ask them - they are the closest information center to the Marlborough Sounds.

Alternatively, the host of your booked accommodation in Picton should be a good resource.

Good luck and please let us know how your trip unfolds.

Our thoughts are with our Kiwi friends.

Thanks. Calling the Picton iSite is a good idea.

The Marlborough area got hit with lots of rain and flooding after the earthquake. It looks like we may be better off elsewhere.

Here are some recent updates:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/nz-e...hquakes-storms
http://www.doc.govt.nz/kaikouraearthquake
http://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-rec...orough/alerts/

"17 November 2016: Care required on Queen Charlotte Track
The track is open but walkers need to be aware that there are some slips and small trees across the track in places. All are passable but caution is required."

Walkers need to have good footwear and be prepared for wet and muddy conditions underfoot. "

Seems like rains and stormy seas are easing now, but I recommend you check Metservice to monitor the storm and flooding situation.
