Information on Transit Visa in Australia

Hello fellow travelers...

I am planning to go to New Zealand in these next couple of months, and my flight will stop at Sydney, Australia. It will take around more than 12 hours transit time, and I wonder if I apply for the transit visa, can I get out from the transit area? It would be nice to have a quick stroll before going back to Indonesia.

I tried to look online for this and I am still baffled either I am permitted to go out from the airport or not. Maybe any of you have applied for this visa before can help me answering my question, please....

I really appreciate any assistance from you guys... HELP!!!

As far as I'm aware there isn't such a thing as a transit visa, there's an Australian visa that you apply for online OR you are in transit and don't require a visa but you would not be able to leave the terminal.

If you do not apply for Australia transit visa then you are required to leave Australia with-in 8 hours of your arrival into country. The advantage of Australian transit visa is that you will be able to stay in Australia for 72 hours after that your Australian transit visa will be expired. For more information on Australian transit visa you can click here http://www.australia-citizenshiptest...australia.aspx.

Not sure about that other website since it is not from an official source. Just in case, look at this one, it's from the government:
