Bus tour or Airplane

I am fyling to Sydney in late January 2007. I was planning on taking a bus tour down to Melbourne and then taking another bus tour to Adelaide. Now I am thinking of taking only one bus tour and flying to one of the two cities. Should I still do both bus tours or just one bus tour. If only one bus, then to which city?

I took the bus tour from Melbourne to Adelaide and really enjoyed it. How much time do you have, are you a people person? If you are a control freak or traveling with family members, you may want to consider renting a car or flying. There is a lot to see along the way and it is enjoyable to do it with others.

I am taking the bus tour from Sydney to Melbourne this year so I really can't comment on it.

I am also taking the 6 day tour of Tasmania in December.

I do have to question taking a bus tour across Australia through the middle (Alice Springs) as the flies are terrible, there isn't that much to see and the trip take a much longer time.

I am going by myself, so renting a car is not for me. I am only going to be in Australia for three weeks (but then again I am limiting myself to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and KI). I am flying back to Sydney from Adelaide. I am leaning towards flying to one of the destinations, but I am wondering which one has more things to see? The bus tour from Sydney to Melbourne or the bus tour from Melbourne to Adelaide?

hellyes74,

Depends where the tour takes you. I have not been on the trip from Melbourne to Adelaide.

The trip from Sydney to Melbourne can be either down the Hume Highway or the Princes Highway.

If you were to drive straight down either highway you miss a lot as the highways bypass so much. Each time I go down south they seem to have built a new bypass. So depends entirely on where the tours take you enroute and how much time they take.

If you wanted to save time by eliminating one and replacing with a plane trip you could still do a day trip to either the ocean road from Melbourne or the South Coast from Sydney.

If you were driving yourself I would say drive to Melbourne and on this site you can find a lot of recommendations for detours and byways. A bus may restrict the experience so perhaps you could eliminate this tour. Please let us know first what the trip offers.

Hellyes, have you looked at the Wayward Bus tours www.waywardbus.com.au. They have an excellent reputation and do tours covering all the areas you are thinking of, Syd-Melb, Melb-Adelaide and even one of KI.

If you wish to fly one segment I would probably fly the Syd-Melb leg. Or, another possibility could be take the tour from Syd-Melb, and do the Great Ocean Road as a day trip from Melbourne. (Lots of companies offering this). Obviously you won't get to spend nearly as much time as the various place as a 2-3 day trip, but it would still give you the chance to see the main highlights.

You are going to Australia during one of the warmest times of the year. Therefore, I would recommend the Great Ocean Road tour. I went with the waywardbus and was very happy with the tour. You can sleep in either hostels or hotels at night, depending on how much money you want to spend and how much privacy you need.

I would also go for the Great Ocean Road option as a 'not to be missed'. I loved it, as did my Mum who had come out to visit me. We added on an extra day of the tour to do the Barrossa Valley winery tour - a really enjoyable day out and as only thre of us had chosen this addition, we managed to see most of the area in the one day.
