You know how when you get home from someplace, you want to "recapture" it?

Today was a beautiful day in Northern California, so we hopped in the car, put the top down, and made our way to the coast -- after stops in Point Reyes Station and Marshall (where I had some delicious bbq oysters at The Marshall Store), we headed to Mt. Tam, hiked about 3 miles, after which we headed home. As we were driving through the Sunset District, my DH casually mentioned that we ought to be able to find some decent Vietnamese food (for those who don't know, the Sunset District in San Francisco is heavily populated by people of lots of Asian countries - Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Thai)....I quickly googled "bun cha" and the area where we were, and found Loi's, a hole-in-the-wall a few blocks from where we were. We were in heaven that they had both "Bun Cha Ha Noi" and "Bun Bo Nuong" on the menu, so we got them to-go, settled in at home, and ate a delicious (and very inexpensive, by US standards) meal that reminded us so well of our trip! We still have to find something a little closer to home (spring rolls don't travel very well), but this was a great start!

Good for you! And, yes, we do understand the restless need to find good Vietnamese food between trips.

I will weigh in from the other coast (where it was not a beautiful day). A few weeks ago when I was in New York City, I had the chance to stop by the Asia Society (725 Park Ave) to view the exhibits. I chatted with the staff awhile and asked where to find good Vietnamese food in the city. They recommended Vermicelli, also on the Upper East Side (2nd Ave between 77th and 78th). We went straight there and enjoyed a delightful meal.

I hope that you do find something "a little closer to home" so you can indulge more often.

While visiting my brother in Englishtown, NJ last week, he mentioned that a new Vietnamese restaurant opened in his town. Since we had returned from Vietnam less than a month before, we decided to go there to try to recapture part of my memories of the wonderful Vietnamese food we ate during our trip. Not expecting too much, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the food was excellent and the prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. In chatting with the owner, she said that this was the second restaurant that family members had opened in NJ, and that it was so sucessful that more family members were coming from VN to open a third. I asked her if she would consider opening one in Massachusetts and she said that I was the second person that week to ask her about opening a Vietnamese restaurant in MAssachusetts. Since she is not coming to Massachusetts to open a restaurant, does anyone know of a good Vietnamese restaurant in eastern or central MA?

Well yes I do. It wasn't a hankering for something Asian but it was for something from the South Pacific after our Tahitian cruise in 2006. I searched and found that Pitcairn island, you know from the Mutiny on the Bounty tale had a sales website. To recapture that lovely Tahitian islands feel I ordered honey form Pitcairn. Yes they make their own honey. I placed the order in August and finally received it November! They have to wait for a ship to come by, take it to it, then its shipped to New Zealand and from there it comes by ship to the US. Sort of crazy really but it was the best honey I've ever had.
