We took the cruise downstream from Chongqing to Yichang because it was quicker. There's no reason I can think of for taking more time on the boat, since there's so much else to see in China. For more info see:

The scenery moves a little more slowly when you're going upstream, and if you have plenty of time for your whole journey, then it's not a bad way to rest a little.

We went upstream and felt that we wasted a day that could have been spent seeing more of China.

Downstream. We took the cruise from Chongqing to Wuhan about 5 years ago and it got a little boring towards the end.
