Travel from Chiang Mai to Siem Reap
What is the best way to travel between Chiang Mai and Siem Reap, and how many days should we plan for each location? Only a two week trip and need to cover as much territory as possible but still want to relax and enjoy. Thanks

Of course, there is no train that goes all the way from CM to SR, but you can take a train to the border. If you are interested in going overland, I'd highly recommend that you read www.talesofasia.com

We used our Bangkok Discovery Air pass and flew Chaing Mai to Bangkok and connected to Bangkok Siem Reap. We spent three full days in Siem Reap, so four nights, and we did a three day trek in Chaing Mai and then 4 days in the town itself. We thought this was a good amount of time, so if you are not trekking 4 nights may be good for you. Remember that at least one day is taken up by travel.

I have done both the bus and train from Bkk to the border. I prefer the bus but others may like the train. If you do opt for the bus dont buy a ticket from the scam "agents' but rather directly form the company at MorChit.
If you have time in Arunyaprathet it is worth while looking at the market. Just enormous and full of anything that can be carried down from China etc. We usually stay overnight but the trip to SR can be done in a day.
Crossing the border at PoiPet is a bit of an experience, as is entry to Cambodia after you cross the 'no mans land' containing the casino. You can get an online visa which helps a little. Getting a taxi or bus to SR is your next exciting adventure. There are no end of "helpful" people who will assist for a fee.
The road now to SR is excellent, unlike the horror track of a few years ago
Personally if I was in Chiang Mai I would consider taking a boat to Luang Phrabang then by Air Lao to SR. This way would be much more scenic and you would avoid the border crossing. Arriving in Cambodia by air is much nicer. You could even stop in Vientiane.
