I just wanted to put in my two cents. I sat at breakfast buffet today (in BKK, soi 8, Sukhumvit) and watched both the people inside and outside. I saw a lot of folks wearing SHORTS. Don't be concerned about packing your shorts for your visit to Bangkok next week! They were not all tourists. Granted, most were; but there were some Thais in shorts as well. Sukhumvit area is more laid back than the area around the 5* riverfront hotels.... just my opinion. If you are saying near On Nut, you should be fine. Be comfortable! It's hot here.
Hope to get together while we are both in the city at the same time.

Glad to ease the fear of packing for a BKK trip. I just may don my own shorts today, as I'm out running errands and getting my hair done for the big birthday party for son tonight (if you were in BKK, you could come!).
Yesterday I was in he neighborhood around On Nut. It really is a ways out from most of the "action" around Sukhumvit. You will definitely want to ride the skytrain down to Siam and Nana area to have a walk around. Lots of food options, lots of shopping. It's about 6 skytrain stops, I'd guess, from On Nut.

Carol: Have the Adelphi Suites lowered their prices any due to the drop in tourism? Will it be necessary to have a reservation ahead of time, or can we just walk in off the street and get a good rate?
Enjoy!

Sandra, I am in a studio this time. I usually get the executive apartment for my stays here, but decided I could make do with something smaller this time. I am paying a special reduced price for my first 7 nights, but the price goes back to the usual rate for my last 6 nights. The executive apartment price has NO special deals what so ever. And in fact, that price has gone up! I think the bigger apartments must be in demand.
To get the special rate, you have to book online. If you walk in the door, you can probably get a studio apartment right now, but you will not get the best price. Tourism is down. I can tell, just walking down Sukhumvit. The traffic is still awful though! It's good that Adelphi is so close to the BTS station!
It was 104 degrees yesterday, so I put on my shorts. So did a lot of other people. Trackcoach, you'll be just fine! But keep in mind that there are dress codes for wats and temples. Also, if you want to go to one of the outdoor bars on the top floor one of the skyscrapers, you will need to be dressed in smart casual attire. SKY BAR at the top of STATE TOWER by the river is my own personal favorite. It is 64 floors up. DS and I want to check out the new bar at the top of the Centara Grand sometime this trip. It opened sometime last fall, near the end of 2008. It is on top of Central World Plaza shopping mall. Our fodors buddy dogster (where is he) stayed at Centara last August. The outdoor bar, 54 floors up??, hasn't been open all that long.
