Thailand Apparel

I am aware that it is mandatory to dress conservatively (and modestly) when visiting temples; however, is it appropriate for men to wear walking shorts while in the city (shopping, sightseeing, etc.)? Thanks for your input.

Mike and Sue,

Very much so. Sue also can wear shorts. We (my wife and I) toured, shopped, etc. in shorts and t-shirts and carried short sleeve shirts and suntans (me) and skirt (wife) for occaisions like visiting the Grand Palace and Wats. For reference we were last there in December/January this year.

I think thai people are tolerant to the way you dress, don't worry about it. When you are going to the Palace, or some important temples, there will be some people to check the way you dress if they dissatisfy, they will bring you in, and give you some layers to put on, even some shoes if you wear flip-flop.
