TBTs: Time Between Trips

Now I enjoy traveling as much as anyone, or at least I used to think so. But when I finally get home from a trip, especially a long one, the thought of getting back on an airplane makes me throw up in my mouth, a little bit anyway. And it takes me a good 2 or 3 weeks before I get the bug to leave town again.

Now comes RHKKMK, and I am blown away by their mutual lust (for travel, <i>bien entendu</i. They're just getting off the plane from a multi-continent hip-hop, and they'll barely have enough time to sober up before setting out for Bangkok via Frankfurt and Timbuktu. All in economy (wherever/whatever that is.)

How do they do it? And what is a sane & decent interval between trips? (6 weeks, says I).

It's simple. They get a rare opportunity to vacation with Panda, Mrs. Panda and friend of Panda. Of course they are availing themselves. Plus, they live in Darkest Needham. It's a wonder they ever go home. Not to mention, what do sanity and decency have to do with Bob's travel plans?

I'm with Bob and Karen! I've got three weeks between my return from BKK yesterday, and my departure for ZRH, and then when I return from ZRH, I go back to BKK just one week later. When I return from BKK, I have just one week and I'm off to Vegas! Hopefully I get to do SOME of it in business or first class though! Travel when you can!

I'm not sane or decent I guess.

Well, Rizzuto, you've gotta keep a couple of things in mind.

1) B&K are retired. So while they lead active lives between trips, it's not like they have to deal with picking up the dry-cleaning to wear to the office, etc. between trips.

2) K is super-organized. When I stayed with them a few weeks ago, she had all the clothes for this African trip already assembled and hanging on one wall hook. All the clothes for the upcoming trip with the Pandas were hanging on another.

Me, I'm like you. I've taken to long weekend trips these days. Headed to Montreal this coming weekend to visit cousins, but it has been almost a month since the Boston GTG. I think the year ahead will not be filled with very much travel at all, and that's okay. I'm living vicariously through everyone else's reports.

If I got to travel business class I think I would be able to muster up the strength!

I find a lot of the time it's psychological; I'm usually ready to go home at the end of a trip, no matter how long or short it may be. And by the same token, I'm ready to move on to the next destination when it comes up.

bc, i was told by bob, that he does all the packing himself. so it seems to contradict karens involvement.

Let's not forget that his neighbors all contribute to a travel fund to keep him out of town as often as possible. Even in Darkest Needham, they cooperate against local pests.

Bob's neighbors love him. He is a bright beacon of welcome in brightest Needham.

Kuranosuke, Bob may indeed physically place articles into his suitcase. Rest assured Karen makes certain they're clean, in wearable condition, and assembled for him to do so. Karen is plenty involved in the process.

"Brightest Needham?" An oxymoron.

Let's face it, lots of us look at Bob and Karen and get a bad case of travel envy. (Though I do not envy their flights in economy.)

Back when I did lots of business travel, I thought that flying across the country once a month was fine... if I had to travel two weeks in a row that was too much and if I went longer than 6 weeks without flying I started getting withdrawals... of course, I was flying in first. For long international trips, 6 - 8 weeks between is about right for me.
