Shangrila htl is asking for copy of CC when booking online; is this common?

Dear Fodorites,
DH is taking his parents to China, specifically to Macao, Zhongshan and HK in Jan.

He made a hotel booking at the Shangri-La hotel (in Zhongshan) directly from the hotel website.
He entered the CC info to secure the booking.
The next day, DH received an email and was asked to provide a copy of front & back of the CC.
Is this common?
We have travelled to many parts of the world, but this the 1st time that the hotel also asked for a copy of CC (even after we may the pre-pay online).

Here is the email from the hotel:
For the reservations under Advance Purchase rates, full prepayment non-refundable at point of bookings by credit card is required. And to avoid that the credit card was un-authorized before using for reservations and failitate processing the credit card payment, we will request for the credit card back and front copy with the below attached billing authorization form of the credit card holder's signature,to make sure it is under authorized, then email back to us.Thank you very much!

Just wondering if this is legit, and common in Asia?
TIA!

It is common in Asia. I've never encountered it booking directly through the hotel's website, but I have encountered it when booking via a local agency.

Thanks Kathie....that's interesting though, that you never encountered it when booking directly thru hotel's website, which is what DH did.
Do you think he should call the hotel and ask, or is it safe enough to email back the info?
Ever since my bag got stolen in Spain from the recent trip, we got pretty paranoid with these things

If you have been dealing with the hotel directly, I think that's legit and it's safe. The problem is that credit card fraud are pretty common in some parts of the world and the hotel has to protect themselves.

yes, it is common. hotels must protect themselves from CC fraud use. But be sure the hotel is the right one. You better give a call to the hotel and make sure that they know this thing.

I've had this with several hotels in Thailand and India. Just recently had to do it with a hotel in Turkey.
