Recommend Westin, it seems it a member of Starwood. http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/index.html

Four seasons is also very good.

It depends on which city you will visit. Some location of the hotels are good but some not that good enough.

We stayed at Le Meridien (club level) - comparable to either of those two for less money (and it is very new and modern, if you like that sort of thing). Great location as well.
Hi Shanghainese - how are you?

Paulchili, where exactly is Le Meridien? I'm staying there next month and I can't find anything that has a precise map. Is it actually on Nanjing Lu? And how far from Peoples' Park? Thanks.

Paul -- I'm doing great, thanks for asking. Heading to China end of next month for 2 weeks, when/where do we GTG?

Dear Shanghainese,

I will be in Shanghai 10/14 - 10/17. Based on your experience, where is the best place to buy pearls etc. - Beijing or Shanghai? (I apologize if you have been asked this question before.) I will be in both places. I read something about you getting pearls strung in Shanghai, so I was interested.

Also has anyone heard about a new B&B in the French Concession - Quintet B&B?

Thank you very much.

Lisa

EdEdwards,
The hotel overlooks People's Park but the entrance is from a side street off of Nanjing Rd East.
A fellow Fodorite has prepared an EXCELLENT and a very detailed map of Shanghai in English & Chinese that we used for walking around(it does show Le Meridien). I would be happy to e mail them to you for printing if you are interested.
I believe you made an excellent choice in hotels based on our experience.

Shanghainese - lucky you - going back to China; all that wonderful food!
I am open to your suggestions for GTG, either individually or as Bay Area group (I couldn't make the last one unfortunately).

Lisa -- I topped my Notes from last year's trip for you. Don't know the Quintet, great location tho, I used to live on that street with DM and DS in a house with a nice garden shared with 2 other families, now it's the Belgium Consulate. The 2nd night 50% makes it a very good rate. Do report back if you stay there. You'll also find restuarant recommendations on that street in my Notes.

Paul -- Please go to the US/California board, there is a GTG dinner in SF on 10/24, I am a maybe because a HK friend flying in that week and we leave for vacation the week after.

Please e-mail [email protected], she'll give you my address, we can plan something after I return mid-Nov. Btw, she's leaving next week for 2 months in Korea, China and Vietnam, we will GTG with her in Lijiang.

Hi S!!! I wish I could meet at the GTG in Lijiang!!

Just want to second Paulchili's recommendation of Le Royal Meridien. I took his recommendation and stayed there for about 6 days in 2007.

Although I did not have a club room, or a Bund view, the hotel ranks among the best I've experienced. I like the location better than that of the Westin. Make sure you go outside to Nanjing Lu early one morning and watch the ballroom dancers, just a few steps from the hotel...
