Question about taxis at Singapore airport
I was wondering whether anyone can tell me whether taxis at the airport take credit cards. We are arriving at 1:30 a.m. and that would simplify things greatly.

Taxis have taken credit cards, and also had a period of time when they were in dispute with Visa. During that time, they would take AmEx.
There are ATMs at the airport, so you can easily get some Singapore dollars upon arrival.
jacketwatch, I'll be interested in what your friend has to say. My info on the dispute with Visa is now months old.

Thanks jacket watch. We are coming off two long flights so wanted to avoid searching for an ATM. But looks like that is the only way to be sure. Great if you do hear from your friend and pass that along to us. Have a great trip.

My friend said that taxis from the airport should be cc ready, no problem. Another friend I have in Kuala Lumpur who we are to meet in Singapore and who has traveled there said basically the same so I think it should be fine from Changi.
We too will be coming off flights from Chicago to Japan, then to Singapore so it will be a long haul.
Colleen happy travels to you.

Thanks for the info. We are coming from Vancouver via Hong Kong so I think your flight is even longer than ours. We are used to flying to Europe but this is our first flight to Asia. we are really excited to try something new. Have a great trip.

Hi,
The two biggest taxi companies in Singapore - Comfort/CityCab and SMRT - do not take VISA. Transcab does, but it's a smaller company and you may not be able to find one as easily. There are still a few other smaller companies, but I'm not sure what cards they take. Also there are definitely some taxis that are cash only.
At Changi, you can easily tell the person manning the taxi line you need to pay by credit card and if the one you get doesn't take it, just let the person behind you go first.
On the other hand, ATMs (and money changers) are everywhere in the terminal, so it may not be as much of a hassle to get some cash.
I've included the links to the three taxi companies I mention above.

I don't think it inconsiderate if the drivers accept my currency with no apparent qualms. I have never heard otherwise from any of them though the Turkisk driver preferred new looking bills. Beyond that no one had complained. If anyone said it would be a hassle then yes but hey no complaints, no way to know of any issues.

You are going to one of the most sophisticated places on the planet, not to a third-world country desperate for American exchange. (Or to a Canadian border city like mine where, out of long habit, some businesses will take US dollars and skin you on the exchange rate.) Aside from financial considerations, using the local currency shows respect. And bank-run ATMs are very easy to find at the airport, maybe even in the arrivals hall.
