No short sleeves in Shwedagon Pagoda?
I know that one needs to dress modestly at pagodas. I've planned on dresses that reach my knees. However, I just read on the Shwedagon Pagoda site that they expect "elbow length" shirts. Was anyone here turned away for wearing a sleeveless or shirt sleeve t-shirt/blouse/dress?

The issue is one of respect. Regarding being turned away, the more skin showing, the greater the possibility. So sleeveless? Maybe. Short sleeves? Maybe not. But knowing the custom of a religious site, why would you not comply? The alternative, as I see it, is to not go if complying would be a hardship and it will be hot. Or maybe bring a large scarf to cover yourself.
It's not unlike visiting a person you know prefers no shoes in their home, but going and wearing your shoes inside anyway. Respect for the wishes of those whose home it is or, alternatively, don't go. A pagoda is the Buddha's home.
