Maldives -North, South, Outer Atolls

Is it just me, or is a lot of the info the travel companies hand out about which atolls are which confusing? I say this because a lot of the stuff I read will have a heading about the Outer atolls, and they then start talking about the South atolls. Is there anyone out there who can clear this up for me? Much appreciated. (Apologies if you've already seen this in the Asia section, I forgot to click on Maldives in my original post.)

Hi there,

I don't know how much help I can be but I've been there a couple times. Once to the south atolls and once the Ari atolls. I'm not sure what the difference other than location. To me I paid more attention to what hotel I was staying at, not so much as to where it exactly is. Here is a link to my site that has some info and pictures for the hotels we stayed at. http://www.bombasticlife.com

Hope it helps!

Hi

When we went to the Maldives we took a sea plane to south Ari atoll. It looked like all the islands were beautiful...so I agree with the previous poster...you should take a look at the resort and take it from there. We went to Sun Island and it was wonderful. I have posted some pictures on my homepage: http://gardkarlsen.com/sun_island_index.htm

We stayed at Veligandu Island resort on the Noth Ari Atoll and it was simply out of this world..A short 20 minute seaplane ride from Male..

You need to get the actual name of the atoll. I thought outer atolls refer to the islands facing the outer sea, the ones with choppy water suited for surfing rather than diving but I could be wrong.

What I heard is that coral conditions are better in the atolls further from Male. We stayed at Filitheyo on North Nilandhe Atoll five yrs ago, fantastic conditions. Also I thought the water airplane was a quite funky experience.
