luxury hotel suggestions in Koh Samui and Koh Tao?

Hi--am headed to Koh Samui and Koh Tao in about 2 1/2 weeks. I'm looking for ideas of the top luxury hotels on both islands, BUT as we are two 28 year old American women, we're not looking to be surrounded by honeymooners or be isolated. At the same time, we do not want to travel like backpackers. Staying at the Peninsula and Oriental in BKK. Love to hear thoughts. One possibility is Koh Tao Coral Grand Resort. Thanks!

At Koh Samui you are really spoilt for choice, Chaweng Blue Lagoon, Coral Bay Resort, Coral Cove Chalet, Central Samui Beach Resort, Chaweng Regent Hotel, Samui Euphoria or Poppies to name but a few. Have a look at http://samui.sawadee.com/hotels/

At Koh Tao you have little choice. As you say, the Koh Tao Coral Grand Resort, is one option the other is Charm Churee Villa see http://samui.sawadee.com/kohtao/hote...otels_tao.html I suspect that neither are up to the standard of the best Samui hotels.a

wonderful! many thanks. have been on the sawadee site extensively, but have been unable to verify info i find there from any other source. your thoughts are much appreciated.

do you suggest going to Koh Tao? We don't dive--and don't want to get certified, but with the length of our stay (7 days) it seems to be the only place that is relatively near koh samui, monsoon-free that doesn't involve a ton of travel. we are really pretty open though, so if you have other thoughts, would love your feedback!

To be honest, it?s not my part of the world; I am not a beach person. My son went to Koh Tao a couple of years ago to ?chill out? for three weeks and seemed to enjoy it.

I suspect that it will make a change from the more commercial Samui.

At present you are likely to have thunder storms both sides of the peninsular, but I honestly wouldn?t worry about them too much; they don?t last long, cool the weather down a bit and clean up the atmosphere.

Have you considered heading north for a few days? It is a very different experience to Bangkok or the beaches. I?m biased as I live there, but I would think visiting Thailand without seeing Chiangmai to be a great shame. Bangkok air fly from Samui to Chiangmai with stops at Bangkok and Sukhothai, also worth looking at.

Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] if there is anything that I can help with.

Koh Tao lacks really 'good' accommodation. Have you considored going to a quieter part of Koh Samui? Seems a natural choice. What I would do is book yourslef 4-5 days in a nice place on Samui and pick up the 'Bangkok Post' each day, it is normally in the lobby or you can get from local shop. Watch the weather forecats and if Krabi/Phi Phi look dry just 'hop on over'! Seems the best way to sort things. If you don't dive then I think you will find Koh Tao boring.
You could also go down to Hua Hin first, cab ride 2.5 hrs from bangkok Airport, stay at one of the great spas/resorts like Hyatt/Marriott/Evason/Anantara, then take the 50 minute flight on to Samui.
Koh Tao is a nice little island but if you are after class resorts and not into diving then I would give it a miss.
