Koh Tarutao, Thailand - anyone been there?
I've been all over Thailand, but there's one place I haven't, and I have a friend that obsessively says it's THE best beach/islands in TH...
Has anyone been there? If so, how did you get there, and how many days do you think I can stay in paradise without suffering too much when i leave...?
I'm travelling from the south, from Kuala Lumpur, and plan to head to Koh Tao afterwards.
And just to give you an idea of what i'm into, I absolutely hate Dicaprio and The Beach movie, and almost died of sorrow when I returned to KohPiPi recently..
I just want nice unspoiled beaches, a normal bungallow with a fan, nice seafood, nice thai people and calm and laidback "farangs"... absolutely can't stand silly tourists... is this the right place i'm looking for?

Lots of points here!
Tarutao is certainly a group of islands that has yet to be 'cursed' by mass tourism, although, the main island of Tarutao is becoming quite commercialised, as of course is Koh Lipe!!
I would look at Adang and Rawi in this area. Not quite like Phi Phi twenty years ago, but definitely laid back.
Easy to get to.....just go with any Koh Lipe transfer.....and there are loads of them.... Then it's just local transfers.
So, yes, we've been there, but for us, it doesn't match up to what is still available at Phi Phi, if you choose carefully. I almost die of sorrow when I have to LEAVE Phi Phi....even after umpteen visits.
But hey, we're having a great time looking for something to top it!

You can see Tarutao from Langkawi. If you're coming up from KL, you might make your way to Langkawi, or Alor Star. From Langkawi you can catch a ferry to Satun, where the ferries leave for the Thai islans.

As Michael has said if you are going from KL head to Satun. What time of year? May to october some boats won't operate to some areas. Was it Turatao itself you were looking at?
I haven't been down for years now but first did about 18 years agao in backpack early days. You can still find quiet places to stay and real cheap accommodation. Koh Tao is developing fast, a small island north from Chumphon is Koh Talu which is quiet and laid back, off the coast near Bang Saphan.
