Japan and Hong Kong in 12 nights

I am flying into Fukuoka late on 2nd June and am leaving from Fukuoka early on 14th June. I am planning on spending the night I arrive and the night before I leave in Fukuoka to be near the airport.

I have 12 nights in total and if possible I would like to be able to do both Japan and Hong Kong. I am a female travelling alone so safety is important.

How realistic is it to spend 6 nights in Tokyo and 4 nights in Hong Kong? I would be flying direct from Tokyo to Hong Kong. I am unsure whether I should split my days, as in 3 in Tokyo, out to Hong Kong for 4 and then 3 in Tokyo.

I would also like to do some day trips from Tokyo to a more countryside destination so any help you could offer me here would be great. I realise that I would be packing a lot into a short time but this is a once in a lifetime holiday and I want to be able to see as much as possible.

You certainly could spend 6 nights in Tokyo and 4 in Hong Kong, but I wouldn't advise it. While 4 night in Hong Kong is enough to get a flavor for the city, a mere 6 nights in Japan is not. And if I were choosing just one place to visit in Japan, it wouldn't be Tokyo, it would be Kyoto. But with 11 days (12 nights), I'd spend it all in Japan, and divide my time among two or three stops.

Note that many people think that going to a lot of places allows them to see as much as possible, but in fact it takes away from your time to see/do/experience, as you waste a lot of time in transit.

I would highly recommend that you re-think this trip.

Not.

You are NOT inquiring about a short trip from LA to San Diego here.

Fukuoka is 4+ hours by shinkansen to Tokyo. That's about 1.5 hours by air (plus reaching the airports). It's 40-60 minutes from Tokyo station (the #2 train station in Tokyo) to the airports (40 to Haneda, 60 to Narita) plus early arrival for your flight (1.5 hours give or take) plus a MINIMUM 4.5 hour flight from Tokyo to HK plus another 1.5 hours minimum of transit and customs upon arrival in HK. Then you have to do the reverse to get back to Fukuoka.

Why you would fly Tokyo-HK is another issue. Flights from Fukuoka to HK take 3.5 hours and don't require dragging your carcass to Tokyo.

If you really MUST do HK, you can try to get a flight onward after your arrival in Fukuoka then take a flight from HK to Tokyo (or Osaka if you want to see Kyoto) before returning to Fukuoka.

Your plan makes no sense, if I may be so blunt. The island of Kyushu, where Fukuoka is located, is teeming with all sorts of fascinating sites, and there would be no reason to schlep to Tokyo or Hong Kong in the middle of your trip. If you are looking for shopping, Fukuoka has a huge mall called Canal City, and some decent nightlife.

Nagasaki is also a favorite city of mine on Kyushu, and depending if you are interested in ceramics or nature, I could suggest other stops as well. The Kyushu trains are new and plush, so you should have no trouble getting around.

Why Tokyo? You mentioned Tokyo but the only interest there that you expressed was day trips to the countryside.

Fukuoka is a nice city and there is a lot of countryside quite close by. Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, and lots of rural Japan. Kyushu is a great part of Japan to visit.

One thing about your trip is that it will be into rainy season in Japan. That would be about the only reason for leaving Kyushu. I don't know what HK weather is like at that time.
