Is it risky to travel to Malaysia and Singapore now?
My wife wants to see Singapore and Malaysia in October of this year. I am concerned, with the terrorist trials going on in Indonesia, is there an safety risk to traveling there as an American these days?

Nobody can tell you with certainty that any country is safe. Check your foreign office website for the latest information. We are travelling to Singapore and Penang next summer. We have family in Penang and they are not worried about things. However I did book the trip through a reputable company incase changes have to be made ( my last holiday was DIY)

your question concerning safety risk is too broad. i consider traveling into east los angeles a safety risk. i consider traveling to harlem in nyc a safety risk. i have been to both countries, and i consider singapore no more risky than usa. malaysia is a different story, as they are a muslim country that stymies social and economic opportunities for the other non-muslim citizens. i lived in penang in the late 60s, and i loved it(hokkien mee), but now, like the whole world, things have changed. iwill be going to sing. in oct. and i love it there. the food is out of this world. if you must go to malaysia, i think it would be relatively safe, although i would not rec. remote places. stay around kuala lumpur and you should be ok. don't forget to sip a singapore sling at the long bar at raffels hotel, and eat chili crab at one of the seaside restaurants. enjoy your trip.

It's plenty safe.
My husband and I were just there last month. I couldn't have felt safer.
We spent 4 nights eating at food courts, walking through Chinatown, and shopping in Little India.
Try to plan your stay in Singapore over a Sunday. The Ritz Millenia has an INCREDIBLE Sunday brunch.
Live 5 piece mini-orchestra, sushi, 15 French cheeses, shrimp, lobster claws, lobster tails, pasta made to order, etc. And for dessert, a large array of goodies including individual mini souffle made to your order. It was divine. They served Moet & Chandon White Star. Well worth the $50 a person.
Have fun!
