India - New Delhi to Agra Transportation Question
We are staying at a hotel in New Delhi and are planning to do the Taj Mahal (Agra) in a day trip. We were told that we could get a car and driver for the entire day at a very reasonable price, but when we contacted our hotel about it they gave us an estimate of $800 or so (we had been told it would be under $150). Does anyone know how we could find other driving options? Or alternatively, whether the train is a viable option?

Use the express train. Leaves Delhi for Agra at about 6 am, and returns in the evening. Very cheap. Travel first class air conditioned. Return fares won't total any more than $50, and the journey is about 2 hours each way. You even get breakfast in the mornings. And prolly a meal in the evenings.
You'll get a car for about $25-$30 for the entire day.
You can book the train tickets online.
If you MUST go by car, try getting a quote from Rajasthan Four Wheel Drive. I used them in April this year, and they were fantastic.
Email is [email protected] I don't have the website but Google for it.

I didn't do this when I was there, but just a warning that driving in India is crazy (on par with the worst in China). So, I think it's safer by train, and just get a taxi or rickshaw after you land at train station to take you around.
Hotel taxi rates are ripoffs. Don't book thru hotel (they charge like as if you're in the US). I had a regular taxi driver driving me around all day for just $40 in New Delhi. Probably could've paid even less, but he was nice. Hotel rate would be several hundred for the same service.

Quite correct, mmyk72. My hotel quoted $350 for an air conditioned car from Agra to Jaipur.
I found a car myself (air conditioned, smartly dressed driver who spoke excellent English, seat belts etc)for $90!
He was so good we used him for four days in Jaipur at $25US per day. (note the $90 was because he had to drive to Agra to collect us, so it was a long round trip for him whereas in Jaipur our daily distance was never more than about 50 miles).
