Hongkong hotel

Hi, my sister & brother-in-law have a one night stopover in Hongkong on their way to San Francisco. My sister would like a hotel which is right in the middle of local shopping etc. so she can check out the stores while her husband relaxes in the room. No designer stores or upscale malls, she is looking for relatively cheap shopping. Their budget is about $100 for the hotel. They also have to figure out the best way to get there from the airport. Do any of the hotels have free/reasonably priced shuttles? I'm presuming a cab would be expensive.
Please help. Thanks.

$100 for a hotel in Hong Kong will be quite difficult. You might try the Salisbury YMCA... they are reasonably price, though I don't know if any rooms are in that price range. The location is excellent and there is lots of shopping nearby.

Hotels don't have shuttles in Hong Kong. Taxis aren't all that expensive. There are also buses, and the train.

Rates for the YMCA Salisbury for that date is HK$850 (~US$110) for standard room. Plus 10% service charge. It's a good hotel in the best location, but don't know if the budget is okay or not.

I'm basically looking for hotels in Kowloon, which is close to cheap shopping and easy transportation to the airport.

From Expedia, I think these are okay choices:

Kowloon Hotel - $116 all in for standard room. Behind the Peninsula, but its rooms are tiny.

YMCA International House - $99 all in for "premiere" room; less for others. It's one block from Nathan Road. Totally walkable to the Temple St Market and Ladies' Market at night.

Prudential - $116 all in. Also on Nathan Road, close to Temple St Market, but a little further to Mong Kok (2 stops by MTR, or a few minutes by extremely frequent local buses). [$106

Now, I know this is quite a bit above their budget, but do consider the Langham Place. Expedia has $156 all-in, and it's a true 5* hotel, but right in the middle of Mongkok with all the cheap shopping.

---

Checking Asiahotels.com, there's one new interesting choice in the Causeway Bay area - the brand new Bonaparte by Rhombus. $90 all in. It's 5 minutes walk to the huge Time Square mall and the rest of Causeway Bay shopping and dining.

Metropark is $123. Popular, nice hotel that's across the Victoria Park from Causeway Bay.

---

Taxi will cost about HK$300 (~US$40)to hotels in Kowloon, and HK$350 (~US$50) to those in Causeway Bay.

There's the Airport Express train (two people group ticket is HK$140 one-way to Kowloon, HK$160 one-way to Hong Kong). You can use a complimentary shuttle to many hotels, or cheap taxi ride. On their way back, they can check-in at the Airport Express station before heading to the airport.

But they can also use the Cityflyer bus to all the hotels I've listed. Roundtrip tickets are HK$45 to Kowloon, HK$55 to Hong Kong. You can also pay for one-way, from HK$33-HK$45 depending on route.

Let me add that, personally, based on the budget and description of what they're trying to do, I'll get the Premiere Room at the YMCA International House on Waterloo Road for $99 all-in on Expedia.

To/from the airport, buy the HK$45 roundtrip ticket for the Cityflyer bus, and take the A21. Get off at the stop on Nathan Road just past Waterloo Road "Man Ming Lane, Nathan Road", and the hotel is just 5 minutes walk from there. Going back to the airport, the stop is across Nathan Road, still very short walk.

So, two people total hotel and transportation is under US$120.

Sorry, I think the roundtrip tickets for the Cityflyer is $55 for Kowloon, and $65 for Hong Kong. You need to buy them at a booth at the bus depot at the airport, not from the driver.

My hotel vote would be for the Metropark in Causeway Bay. It has a nice pool on the roof, a pleasant restaurant/lounge, and is right across the street from both a subway stop and Victoria Park, which is beautiful. I can't say that I checked out any shops, but some great shopping can be had just a couple of MTR stops away.

Enjoy your stopover!
