i will be carrying on only a tote bag but im wondering what do bum bags count as?

My guess is that your "bum bag" would count like a handbag. Be careful with the size of your tote bag. I just flew the Cathay Pacific LA-Hong-Kong-LA long haul (Modernized 777 going and older 747 returning) as well as inter asia flights. I returned April 18th. ON THE LONG HAUL FLIGHTS, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANY TYPE OF LARGE CARRY-ON. Apparently many people know this (I did not) and there is an incredible MAD RUSH to get in the boarding line first so one can store their carry-on luggage in the overhead bins close by. You can expect to have basically NO STORAGE under the seat in front of you, the seats are very low to the ground, there is NO leg room and barely enough knee room to get into your seat. On the new modernized configuration 777 there are NO pockets in the seat backs, just slots for the safety guide, etc. Your "bum bag" is likely to be OK under the seat in front of you on either type aircraft. Although I had heard nice things about Cathay Pacific I found this airline to be the most uncomfortable economy cabin I have ever experienced. In contrast, the aircraft on my inter asia flights (1 on Dragon Air division) were bright, airy and roomy. I don't quite understand why they creat nice comfort on the short hauls and discomfort on the long hauls. I would likely not fly this airline again in the future because of the discomfort. One last note: I was impressed with the service. The flight attendants were pleasant, plentiful and performed their services well.

The new CX economy seats have generated a lot of discussion. Just like their new longhaul business seats. While some like the fact that the seatback of the person in front won't recline into you, others like hpeabody find the seats totally uncomfortable.

As for the seat pockets, I have read (and seen new photos) that they're moving them from under your seat cushion back to the "regular" location. Which may cut into your kneeroom a bit.

I've never used a bum bag but I've flown Cathay on several occasions and have never had a problem with carry on luggage. You can count your tote bag as your purse and the bum bag as the carry on luggage, or the other way around, depending on which is bigger. Cathay Pacific is pretty good about these things and, while economy always stinks, the service is fantastic. The flight attendants on Cathay are very accommodating and really go out of their way. At least that's been my experience.

oh crikey
and i was really looking forward to this leg of our journey ( from 10 pm to 5am when we land in hongkong to switch over to finnair a few hours later)
i was told that cathay is really a great way to fly

i am certainly not looking forward to the cramped seating
poor OH is a tall man- so we will have to get an aisle seat or somewhere near an exit i think

i hope we do have a front pocket - ill be lost without it!

thanks so much for enlightening me, folks... ill forget about sleeping and try to get some sleep on the finnair leg that will get us into helsinki by mid afternoon

i read that they have a good inflight entertainment system - might as well stay up and do some moving around

Does anyone know if Cathay checks to make sure carryon bags meet the 15lbs limit? I was planning to travel very light for our trip to Bali via HK in 3 weeks, by using a carryon bag and putting everything I need in there. After reading about Cathay's carryon limit, I don't think I can do it now. Thanks for your help!
