Favorite Hotel in KL?
My November trip plans are suddenly in flux. I may be spending several days in KL. It's been a number of years since I was last in KL, so I'd be interested in hearing which hotels are people's favorites and why. I note that there are a wealth of luxury hotels at good prices!

I usually stay at the Mandarin Oriental for it's convenience. It's just next to KLCC where the huge shopping mall is. I could spend a whole day there when the MegaSale is on.
I've stayed at the Ritz Carlton before. It's at one end of Jalan Bukit Bintang (shopping street) and has a spa attached to it.

Ritz Carlton...Club level...and yes, the KLCC Shopping Center is great. The Ritz Carlton is within walking distance of the Malaysian Crafts center...the name of the place starts with a "K"... which has crafts from all over Malaysia where you can get an idea of what types of good are produced in Malaysia.Plus the hotel is a short walk to the main drag Bukit Bintang...I think is the name of the street. If you want the name of a private driver who waits around the Ritz Carlton...let me know...and I'll look for his business card that I have somewhere at home. He was great and charged about $6.50 an hour...spring 2002...the going rate then...for private companies...was about $15.00 an hour. He's been driving for over a decade and his name is Mr. Pau and he was the only Chinese driver that I noticed who was hanging around that area so he was easy to spot. Happy Travels!

My driver's name is Mr. Pau. His telephone number is 016.383.3137. He lives in Ampang. There is a restaurant in Ampang that sounds great. I've seen the photos...it sits on a hill...kind of colonial/tropical look to it. It's called the Tamarind Hill restaurant 1,Jalan Kerja Airlama,,6800 Ampang Telephone-4256.9100. It's well hidden in lush greenery with a breathtaking tropical garden view. It serves an Indochine menu. I didn't have time to go there unfortunately. As for the crafts...the place was called Karyaneka(sp?). Anyone you ask at a hotel will know it. It's listed in guide books, too. As for the spa at the Ritz Carlton...I didn't use it, but my friend who was traveling with me did and loved it...She had a massage and she also worked out in the gym facilities. I loved my room so much until I didn't really come out to roam the facilities thoroughly. Oh, there is a great hole-in-the-wall antique store that I had Mr. Pau drive me to. I can't remember the name of it. I'll look it up though and post it for you. It's one of those old dilapidated kinds of places with GREAT Southeast Asian stuff...Malaysian, Indonesian, etc...Happy Travels!

Kathie, good safe choice with the Ritz Carlton, KL. Their service is legendary. Whenever, I make my way down to the hotel lobby, I would be showered by attention from the helpful staff. As for their spa, the sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and swimming pool is complimentary to hotel guests. Which is glorious, after a long day of shopping... The massages are at normal hotel spa prices. It's a convenient facility.
Guenmai, I have eaten at Tamarind Hill. It's a really lovely quaint isolated bungalow house on a hill, surrounded by other residential houses, converted into a Thai restaurant. The ambience is great. Lush greenery everywhere. Food isn't too bad either.
Not that easy to get there as the road leading to the residential area is unlit and unpaved. But if you're engaging the driver, you might have less of a problem getting there.
HOWEVER, be prepared to be bitten ALL over by mosquitoes. My legs under my long skirt was not spared by the table by the blood-suckers. I counted and was bitten roughly 30 over times throughout the dinner!! If you really do make your way there, the first thing to do is to ask the waiters to put mosquito coils under your table. And perhaps wear pants.
Oh, the owner of the Ritz (who also owns the Mariott next door) frequents the spa. He's didn't seem too keen about the bath robe, the last time I was there. Luckily, the spa is not a communial one.

Thanks for your comments, Tiger Lily. I'll try to avoid the owner or manager of the Ritz who seems to have an aversion to the robes! And thanks for the info about the restaurant.
My thanks to everyone who provided input!

I have booked the Ritz Calton for US$126 a night in an Executive Suite. What a great price on www.asiahotels.com!
Guenmai, have you found the name of the antique store you visited?

The name of the antique store is...Ahmed Toko Antik 25/15-23 Jalan Raya Muda Musa...Tel..298.4258. It's in the Kampong(village) Bahru area of town and just when you get to the area where the street curves...the antik store is at the curve... slightly behind a restaurant...you'll know you are at the right place when you see the perfect view of the Patronas Towers in the distance...from the side street. The store is open daily. If you get Mr. Pau as your driver hopefully he'll remember.I'm the only person he has driven there. He didn't know about the place before I had him drive me there, but we found it. The owner was even shocked and asked how in the world I knew about her store. It looks like a dump, but boy can you find some real good stuff in there. Maybe take a flashlight since it's a bit dark inside. Happy Travels!

Guenmai; It almost sounds like you are a part-owner but I am only expressing my reaction to your enthusiasm.
Can one acquire Mandaley period statues, etc.? Did you take it back tothe Ritz to have anything shipped home?

You guys are a crackup...no I'm not part owner of the antique store...It's just so great to find a place that's really different and not a blueprint copy of everything else...and I didn't ship anything. I just threw my belongings into my suitcase.Happy Travels!

Kathie- You got a great price for the Ritz. I paid $108. for a standard room...April 2001...and then when I arrived I was informed that I had been upgraded to Club level by AmExp Platinum...at no additional cost...with a 24 hr. butler. On that trip a friend had come along ( I usually travel alone ) so we split the room rate...amazing!Happy Travels!

Just back from a short trip to KL... Stayed at the Mutiara Hotel which used to be the former Hilton... It's a real find... One of the best rooms (it's newly renovated). Lovely decor, and all the amenities... The buffet has one of the better hotel food around. And the Monorail station Raja Chulan is just opposite... Very convenient
