driving tour to Pai and Mae Hon Son
Has anyone driven on the loop from CM to Pai, MHS and back to CM? Is the driving doable or is it too hazardous? Appreciate any feedback. Thxs in advance

I've driven the route and the distant is about 140 km from CM to Pai and a further 100 km to MHS. The road from CM to Pai has over 900 curves and bend but quite scenic. The average driving time is about 3 hours plus but I managed to do it in just under 2 hours in a sport car. Be aware that there's an army check point about 2/3 of the way to Pai so have a proper international driver's license. I would not drive the route at night but apart from that it's not that difficult if you take it easy.

I have driven CM to Pai to MHS to CM several times and have enjoyed it tremendously. Like Hanuman I used a car with good curve performance. I have never driven it in a clockwise direction.
I once went straight from CM to Pai driving a Discovery, I wouldn't recommend trying that route in anything less than a good four wheel drive.

I did the route but had a driver. We did it very gradually with several trips off the route. It was wonderful and we loved having a driver so we could thoroughly enjoy what we were seeing and experiencing with no stress.

We did it 3 years ago in the clockwise direction and had a great time. The driving (on the left) is easy as the roads are quiet (apart from in and out of CM). The scenery, particularly from CM to Pai, is spectacular. I would recommnend a 4WD as it is good to get off road to some of the smaller villages. No probs with any checkpoints along the way, but petrol sations are few and far between so make sure you fill up regularly.
