Driving Between Jodhpur and Udapuir

We are in the final stages of putting together our itinerary for Northern Indai. Our tour company has suggested we drive as opposed to flying between these two cities so as to be able to stop in Rankpur. Has anyone done this drive? Is it worth the hours in the car to see Rankpur? How long would it take by car?
Thanks for any help.

It is not a good idea at all driving 175 miles, on a partly hilly road. You need to break your journey, to shorten the distance. You have a couple of dilectable properties on the way. Also, the golden quadrilateral four-laning project from Jodhpur to Ahmedabad criss-crosses the road at many points. There could be some bottlenecks.
However, this is not to suggest that you do this journey by air. You will love driving through this most prestine sceneries of Rajasthan. Ranakpur Temples is an absolute must see, that is, if you do not have the Delwara temples on your plan.

We did the drive from Udaipur to Jodhpur in January this year and highly recommend doing it. In addition to Ranakpur, we also stopped at Kumbhalgarh which I recommend also. I think it took about 10 hours total including the 2 stops and a stop for lunch. The roads were good and no problem at all on this route.

We drove between Udaipur and Jodhpur but we didn't do it in one day. We stopped at Ranakpur and Kumblugarh with two nights each at the wonderful converted heritage hotels Deogarh and Rohetgarh.

WE particularly enjoyed the countryside around and between Ranakpur and Kumblugarh. However I found it a long drive just going from Devigarh (north of Udaipur) to these two and then on the Deogarh. For me your proposed route would be too much.

Could you add a night on the way? I loved driving in India. It was wonderful to drive through smaller towns, to see the life in the countryside and have the option to stop where you want.

Deogarh is a wonderful hotel with great food and some interesting local sites. You can see pictures of this and all the hotels/areas I've mentioned on our site at eyebright.com/travels click on albumbs and then India.

Hope this helps!

We overnighted in a village called Jojowar. We did a village safari where we viited a school, were invited into peoples homes and really enjoyed the scenery and it has not been discovered by tourists yet, so no begging, just very friendly people,

The drive from Jodhpur to Udaipur was one of the highlights of our trip to Rajasthan last year. It is a lovely area to see and a nice way to spend a few hours. No need to overnight on the way -- just start out in the morning, have a couple hours stop at Ranakpur (also a highlight), then go on and get to Udaipur by late afternoon. It will be a lovely day!

Yes, definitely! For me, Ranakpur was a highlight of my time in Rajasthan. It is exquisite, and quite different from the other architecture of Rajasthan. The drive, too, is quite nice as it takes you through the mountains (ghats), which is also different from the huge stretches of desert in other parts of Rajasthan. And if you have the time, you can break your journey (we did not, but I've seen posts here that mention places to stay), and make the detour to Kumbalghar Fort.

I'm planning to travel from Jodhpur to Udaipur via Ranakpur in October. Has anyone any recommendations of a taxi company in Jodhpur ? (a webite would be good). I have only one day to do the trip so am thinking that a taxi is the best form of transport, but does anyone know if it is possible to do the trip by bus and still have a stop at Ranakpur ?

Thanks for any help

HI. My husband and I are going to India for the first time in January and just saw all these wonderful comments about ranakapur. Clearly we don't have time to see everything and when I asked my travel agent about it he said: The Ranakpur temples are a little out of the way on this itinerary, but not to worry, you will be seeing intricately carved temples in Jaisalmer and Khajuraho. Please let me know your thoughts on this itinerary.
