do you know a good tailor in Bangkok
Could you please tell me a good tailor to go to in Bangkok. I would like to get some slacks and jackets made for both my wife and I. We are looking for both good quality, good service and good price. We are only there for four days, is that long enough to get them done.

4 days is a short time, but if you go directly to the tailor and have a fitting each day thereafter, you should be fine....i like sarto monet II, which is located on the 2nd level of the marriott resort and spa shopping mall (between the hotel and the main street...his shop overlooks the parking lot and is next to the laundry/dry cleaner for the hotel...his name is jack...his prices are excellent and his workmanship is very good....jackets and pants take quite a bit of work for quality...don't leave the pick-up to the last day....tell the tailor up front about your time constraints.....will you be returning to bkk after going elsewhere---if so maybe you clothes can be delivered to you at the airport before you leave....its all very risky....

thanks so much for your response, we are actually staying at the Mariotte Resort hotel. Now should I negotiate a price with Jack, how did you do it and could you tell me in what ball park I should be paying for pants/jacket/dress. I really appreciate your help.

jack does not negiotate the price....it is what it is...but always fair
his usualy special is 6 shirts for $80 u.s....
the last pants i had done were about $35 each in a light weight wool....i am big so he may have charged extra for me....
i forget the sport coat price as it has been a while, but i would say maybe $80-150 for wool, maybe less and definately less for textured silk (that jacket is my favorite, in fact i will wear it saturday to a wedding here in boston....he doesn't tend to do packages like many tailors do, but he may have something...say $199. for one suit, one jacket, a pair of slacks, 3 shirts, one tie....know exactly waht you want and bring a sample or a picture--he also has some fashion magizines for you to look at....he has a good supply of fabric samples to choose from in all colors and types of cloth....wool is not the best in thailand, even though it says it comes from england--i don't believe it...he will also mail to you but i find that expensive and things may not fit correctly...
he has done stuff for my wife also....
there is another tailor on the second level who i have also used, but i do not like his stuff as well...he is on the back side facing the hotel...his name is ron...
they are all indians as are most tailors in thailand....they don't actually do the tailoring...it is done by thais in sweet shops, but they do the fitting and the business end of things....
fyi --the mall has lots of stuff: mc- donalds, burger king, swensons ice cream, a bank with good rates--big savings over the hotel (out on main street to the left behind the bakery; pizza hut, jewerly, queen's craft shop, pharmacy (good place for additional water--hotel gives you two bottles per day---don't drink any water, but bottled)...we like the thai restaurant in the mall on the left as you come to the parking lot on the ground floor..it has green awnings....dinner for 2 with beer about $12-15....filled with thai people which makes you know it is good....not fancy, just plain good....
another store for good silk women's stuff is JS Thai silk on the ground floor of the river city shopping center (the end spot where the marriott shuttle boat goes, next to the sheration)..it is opposite the info booth and up escalator at the sheraton end of the building...ask for ms Yai...excellent silk stuff made quite quickly in their own workroom above the store...example: thai silk shell, pants, skirt, over-blouce--heavily stitched all for $185, most all lined and beautifully executed....
DON'T FORGET THAT YOU MIST INITIATE THE PURCHASE AS SOON AS YOU CAN AFTER ARRIVAL....
for jewerly we us thai stone jewerly in the lobby of the terrible nana hotel on soi 4, sukumvit road....we see (believe it or not) Porn, a wonderful woman....we do mostly custom made stuff but they do have stuff ready to buy in the case....fabulous quality at great prices.....a recent braclet we had made was $285, custom designed in 18K gold, very heavy, and a similar on on nantucket island here in massachusetts is $950 and it weighs far less....
i would truct them to ship things to you after you had ordered them if you run out of time.....

Sorry, have to disagree with rhk on this one, regarding negotiating the price at Monet Il Sarto. I have two womens trouser suits made in April and we certainly negotiated the price. I took a favourite suit of mine and had it replicated twice with a couple of tweaks to each in English cashmere, and paid 6400 baht for the two. I seem to recall the price started at about 1000 baht more than this though! I had three fittings over four days, and the suits are still as good as new. I use them for work and wear one of them probably once a week/10 days.

Thanks for the great information. This is very helpful, especially with time limits and with Bangkok being such a huge place and the options for tailors overwhelming. My wife is especially interested in getting some clothing made and knowing where to go for this. You have made our task so much easier.
