Bangkok or Singapore?

I vacation in both regularly and I would say 5-6 full days in Bangkok and 3 full days in Singapore. Bangkok would be a great city to rest up in and spend a lot of days in. Plus, you could just get a serviced apartment there and kick back and rest...and feel like you're at home for a while. There are tons of serviced apartment buildings in Bangkok and in all price ranges. I live in one when I'm there. Go on moveandstay.com for an extensive list with prices and photos. However, if you decide to reserve one, I'd negotiate directly with the building for a better price.
As for Singapore, I'd definitely stay at the YMCA International House (Hotel) at 1, Orchard Rd. next to the Dhoby Gaut MRT(subway) station....private rooms with bathroom. I've stayed there regularly since the 90s. It's about US$50. a day,breakfast included, plus there's inexpensive internet cafe, inexpensive laundry service, and a pool on the roof. And, the location can't be beat...you can MRT everywhere. In Singapore, if you buy an MRT card at the station and don't use it all up before you leave Singapore...just go back to the station and tell them that you're leaving Singapore and they will refund you the unsed portion...you can't lose! I'd agree with the recommendation for only 3 days in Singapore. But, as for Bangkok, I'd suggest that you start with a little soul-searching. You've got to ask yourself whether, by "around the world," you mean:
1. How many different airports you can squeeze into one trip? or
2. How many different countries and cultures you might actually get to experience?
Thailand is a phenomnal place. It deserves no less than a month to see everything from Chiang Mai and the Myanmar border in the North to the Thai islands in the South. To go all the distance to get there and to give it any less than 2 weeks of your time would be a travesty. You'll miss the entire education available in such an experience.
A man I met passing through Bangkok literally takes in 100 different countries a year -- it has something to do with a club he belongs to. The club gives him travel discounts based on the number of countries he visits. Often, however, his travels involve only one day here and one day there. He'll take in up to 4 different countries on a single 1-week trip just to collect the stamps in his passport.
Thus, like I say. . . you need a little soul-searching. A round the world trip can be a chance of a lifetime. You must decide for yourself first if you want to go thin and wide or narrow and deep.

Ladyhawk. The man sounds like a glutton for punishment. A 12 hour flight to Bangkok is 11 hours 50 mins too long for me, stuck in a tiny seat and served plastic food after a two hour wait to get on the plane in the first place.

Thanks for all of your responses! Everyone seems to agree with 6 and 3 days. If I do the around the world flight, I do not plan to make too many stops. I find the first day in a new location I don't like and the second day the place grows on me. The third day I love it and want to go back.
Now, if you had to make a choice would it be Bangkok or Singapore? I'm assuming Bangkok because you said six days.
