We have a beach house a few kilometres from Phetchaburi. It is a small and rather uninteresting inland town and I wouldn?t consider it worth a visit. About the only attraction is an old palace set in rather pleasant gardens on the hills above the town and accessible by cable car.
If you do want to head that way, I would suggest stopping over to look at the palace then going on to either Cha Am or Hua Hin.

I have only taken the bus through Phetchaburi and it did not look all that interesting. I also spoke to some locals about going there and they had the opinion that there was not much to see.
As for Cha Am and Hua Hin, the beaches and hotels are much nicer Hua Hin. I stayed at the Sofitel in Hua Hin and I highly recommend it. Amazing grounds, wonderful pool and spa, a big buffet breakfast every morning, etc. etc. I had a huge room with a private terrace for about $130 a night.

Thanks much Tangata and Dawn. Do you think Hua Hin is feasible as a daytrip from BKK? I'm just looking for a cute place on the gulf to stop at for a while. Also, is it difficult to get to from BKK? I know there is bus service, but are there trasfers at all? Any further info would be much appreciated.

Petchaburi is OK for a stop en-route to take the cable railway up to the Old Palace but otherwise nothing much there. Hua Hin is 3 hrs 15 by bus, 2hrs 30-45 by taxi. Taxi is B 1,500 each way. Train takes 4 hrs, fun if you like trains!! Hua Hin is a good place, nice and relaxed, dry weather, good food, friendly. Guesthouses run from about $15 and 2 star hotels about $30, 3 star hotels/resorts from about $40/50, and of course some amazing resorts such as the 'Grande Dame' the Sofitel!! Also you have Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, Anantara, Regent etc etc.

I think Hua Hin is a little bit far for a day trip, however, an overnight trip would give you enough time. It takes a little less than 3 hours (if I am remembering correctly) to get from BKK to Hua Hin via bus.
Do not use the train, the bus is much faster.
It is very easy to get from BKK to Hua Hin. Just go to the southern bus terminal in BKK. The buses are labeled well and buying tickets is very easy. There is a bus that goes directly to Hua Hin (there may be a few stops along the way), but the last stop will be Hua Hin. No transfers.
