Spirit is a perfectly reputable airline. But Spirit charges extra for many aspects of your trip such a carry on luggage and advance seat assignments. So your "savings" might not be that. Here is the guide to their charges. http://www.spirit.com/optionalservices

I would suggest that you fly with another airline if you are traveling with family. As above poster has indicated, Spirit charges for lots of things and you may be able to get another airline for the same money. When are you planning to fly?
I would also try Southwest Air as they have some decent prices end of January and February depending on your dates. They allow 2 bags each for free. We use Southwest when we travel.

Try these 2 search engines to get flights and prices also.
I am not a big fan of Spirit because of a problem I had one time I flew Boston to Myrtle Beach. Got stranded at the airport overnight because of a mechanical problem w/ the plane. Spirit finally flew us out on another airline the next day. It was not a fun experience. However, flying is what it is now so not sure it makes a difference which airline you fly on anymore. However, traveling w/ family can be a deal breaker as you want a good flying experience.
I would check out the prices for your dates and see what the best deal is figuring in check in fees, etc. Good luck.

Another thing to consider is schedule and frequency. I checked the Spirit website for Las Vegas - New Orleans on February 15 to Feb 21.
Each day that week Spririt has only one itinerary and it is overnight with 2 stops:
depart LAS 12:20 AM
arrive MSY 10:30 AM
2 Stops
For Feb 18 the ticket price is $126 one-way for one person. If that midnight+ flight doesn't go then you are stuck for the night.
On the same date, United has a flight dep 9:33a - arr 7:48p for $112 one-way with one stop of 2 hr 9 min. At the united website I counted 12 departure times with one-stop itineraries after the 9:33 departure on the same day.

Thanks everyone, We are needing the flight for 19 Sep. The flight isn't overnight. I did realise they charge for baggage but so do United. I am hesitant with Spirit due to bad reviews!!

Good, then you have time to do some more searching for prices. I do think you might be wiser not to fly on Spirit. The Myrtle Beach flights only fly in and out once a day so if there are any problems you could be stuck. Looks like same applies to Vegas flights.
I just got an email that Jet Blue is going to charge baggage fees now. Can't seem to get away from it. You could just do carry on w/ 4 of you and save $$$ there. Good luck in your search.

well guess you all can keep your checked luggage to one each and that should work. No way around it unless you can get flights on S.W. air w/ no baggage fees. It is what it is these days in the travel world.
Stay safe. Enjoy your trip.
