Mobile Phones on Aircraft
This story is in the News in the UK. I cant imagine anything worse than sitting anywhere near some bored person who decides to ring all his/her friends and chat in a loud voice about rubbish just to let them know that they are flying, OMG the horror of it.

At least for now, US based airlines are banned by FAA to allow cellphone use.
The technology is there and there were actual hearings about this issue, but (thank god), FAA ruled against it because majority of the letter writers, e-mailers, and the witnesses at the hearinhs were against it.
AA is will be trying internet wireless service on their flights starting in few months, but the VOiP will be blocked, so the passengers won't be able to use Skype.com or similar services.

I just read a couple days ago a huge announcement from China's Shenzhen Airlines that they'll let passengers use cellphone very soon.
One thing much worse than chatty Americans talking on cellphones is chatty Chinese talking cellphones!

The FAA has never banned cellular telephones on board aircraft. The FCC is the agency that prohibits their use.
The FAA gives airlines wide discretion in their approval or prohibition of the use of personal electronic devices (including phones) aboard their aircraft, with a handful of exceptions (such as electric razors).

Well in the USA, you can now use your mobile phone on many airlines the instant the wheels touch the tarmac...flying into the UK, they annouce you can't use your mobile phones till you are inside the terminal but nobody pays any attention to it anyway.
